Conversations with JOB and Charles.

JOB. Few professional surfers have reached such an enigma-status and level of unanimous hatred. And why? ‘Cause the dude was a little cocky? Hell, how else do you make it in surfing, if not with confidence? Well, the cogs of change have begun to chug, and JOB’s public perception may be but a coupla foundation-shaking film premieres away from makeover. A new biopic, Who Is JOB?, is making its way ’round the world in the form of some film premieres in major cities. The film screened for the first time recently in California, and by a few accounts is set to rattle some cages. Chas Smith, adorable US wordsman (and occasional Stab contributor), was recruited to put his (very) unique twist on the film’s genetic makeup. Some chapters, scripted by Chas, include Jamie’s A Dick, Jamie’s A Retard and Jamie’s Mum Left Him. Senseless narcissism? Nay – bold truth. Stab called Chas to get his take: “In the movie there’s different kind of chapters which explain different parts of his life, and I went kinda bold with them. I called him a retard, ’cause he was – he went to special ed when he was a kid. (We did) Things like that to kinda explain how he got to be who he is.” Jamie was a retard. Jamie’s mum did leave him. Jamie did have an ear infection and had to surf with his ears duct-taped. The film don’t lie. And Jamie liked it that way. After speaking to Chas, Stab phoned Jamie to get the flip-side perspective… which was surprisingly similar:
