After nine days of competition in El Salvador, the ISA World Juniors have concluded with Team Hawaii coming out on top. It is the fourth time Hawaii has claimed this honor, pretty remarkable for a small island chain of less than one and a half million people.

Australia took silver, the US bronze, and the French copper.

Featuring a record 419 athletes and 45 national teams, the ISA world games is the most prestigious junior competition won preciously by names like Gabriel Medina (BRA, 2010), Tatiana Weston-Webb (HAW, 2014, 2013), Filipe Toledo (BRA, 2011), Tom Curren (USA, 1980), Tyler Wright (AUS, 2010, 2009), Alejo Muniz (BRA, 2008), Laura Enever (AUS, 2008), Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS, 2007), Julian Wilson (AUS, 2006), Owen Wright (AUS, 2006), Stephanie Gilmore (AUS, 2005, 2004), Matt Wilkinson (AUS, 2004), Jordy Smith (RSA, 2003), Leonardo Fioravanti (ITA, 2015), Brisa Hennessy (CRC, 2016), and Caroline Marks (USA, 2016).

Eweleiula Wong and Luke Swanson swept the U-18 divisions for Hawaii, while Erin Brooks, the Texas-born and Oahu-raised prodigy took home gold in the U-16’s Girls for Team Canada. Willis Droomer from Australia won the Boys U-16.

Stylish hat wearer and juggernaut behind Olympic surfing, ISA President Fernando Aguerre said:

“What an amazing competition. It’s been wonderful to see the best junior surfers ripping the waves of El Salvador, this wonderful destination that has become one of the prime surfing spots in the world. As far as I am concerned, these are the best World Junior Surfing Championships in history. The best waves, the largest amount of competitors, the largest amount of teams and the largest amount of supporting crew that came along with the athletes. This event has been a huge success in uniting the junior surfers of the world in peace, through surfing, for a better world for everybody.”

Big ups to all those involved.
