You’ll probably remember Cam Richards from the digital hoopla that almost saw him beat Dane Reynolds in a popularity contest. Since then Cam’s signed with Vissla, and spent his time traversing the globe with his equally underrated comrades, slowly slipping into obscurity. Until now! Cam’s featured in the latest edition of Mr Porter’s The Journal, in a ‘Young Americans’ feature alongside Riley (son of Tony) Hawk, and aesthetically pleasing skateboarder Ben Nordberg (who’s actually from Bath in England) who recently featured in a Burberry campaign. Cam riffs on his occasional LA home, and answers the usual questions asked of the pro surfer in the mainstream media. “Is the life of a pro surfer as good as it sounds?” And so on. The real interest here is the clothes.
Cam’s traded in the Vissla for a subtle mix of Marni, Saint Laurent, Elder Statesman and Alexander Wang. There’s nothing that can quite make a man feel as special as rocking up to the beach wearing two grands worth of clothes. Realistic? No. Ridiculous? Slightly. Likely to inspire a couple of hundred sales from trust fund babies/trophy wives fitting out awkward sons/fabulously rich old guys wanting to shave off the years and dive into the perpetually youthful surf lifestyle? Absolutely. Bravo Mr Porter, you’ve done it again.
