The Hollow Side Of Canada With Pete Devries
More rubber on rubber than jean on jean.
There’s something helplessly intriguing about quality surf in cold water. It’s the epitome of dedication to recreation, and entering the waters of Tofino, Canada, is something most would guffaw at. But here we see Mr Devries making a solid case for taking a trip up past the northwestern tip of the United States. “Finding surf on Canada’s west coast is easy,” says filmmaker Adam Chilton. “It’s all around Tofino at the nearby beachbreaks. Tofino is as consistent as it gets for year-round swell. You can surf every day. Getting good surf though, is a bit more of a process. It’s fickle and takes patience. The better days are hard to come by.”
“As for the more remote breaks, it’s boat access only,” continues Adam. “You have to know a friend with a boat or have some sort of hookup. It’s not easy-access. To get to some of these spots it’s open ocean travel for one-to-two hours. Sometimes it can be rough and wet, other days calm and sunny. You never know what you’re gonna get. It’s a prepare for the worst, hope for the best kind of thing. And we’ve had both. This trip just happened to be glassy with perfect weather.” Don’t it look romantic?
