We’ll be ready next time

Mick Fanning has admitted the tour was caught out by last week’s macking Cloudbreak swell. “At Cloudbreak we know now that with the right equipment we could surf heats in massive swell. I think in the future if we’re presented with the same kind of swell in an event window everyone on tour will be properly prepared and ready to go,” he says in this exclusive interview.

As the swell of the century thundered down the reef at Cloudbreak, Fanning found himself in an unenviable position. As a Surfers’ Union representative, the decision whether the contest would run or not – a call that could have cost someone their life – was looking to fall on him (he was able to remove himself from the process, however). Once it was called off, he then found himself on a boat in the channel with his wife begging him not to surf, no boards even if he wanted to and the sickening feeling one of the great moments in surfing history was about to pass him by. Then a brown-faced angel with tattooed fists fluttered by. “I was happy to lend him my 8’0,” recalls Hawaiian underground charger, Kala Alexander, who came to Fanning’s rescue with one of his boards. That board would end up in pieces before too long but not before Fanning snagged a couple of waves he’ll never forget.

What are your reflections on the day?

It completely blew my mind. I couldn’t believe what my eyeballs were seeing. The guys that have dedicated their lives to chasing those monster swells were awesome. They were so prepared and ready to go, it was epic to witness. To get out there and get a couple and take a beating is something I’ll never forget.

What was your gut feeling when you first saw it that morning?

I actually missed the first two heats and when I got out there it was starting to clean up. So my gut feeling was, I’m out there whether this event is on or not. My wife was with me and she didn’t want me to go out but I couldn’t sit on the boat and watch. It was heavy.

Can you talk us through how the decision was made not to run the contest?

I didn’t get too involved in the decision. I didn’t want to be their speaking for everyone and making the decision on behalf of someone that might wanna go out. The waves were bigger and heavier than most of us on tour have surfed. Matt Wilson, the contest director, pretty much made the executive decision in the end and he did with the safety of the surfers in mind. Maybe if Raoni didn’t get buckled in the second heat it would have made it harder to call it off.

Who was vocal for and against it?

Nobody was particularly vocal. People have become more opinionated in hindsight but it was a huge decision. Serious injury and peoples lives had to be considered.

What were the arguments?

I don’t really think there was any arguments, just some in-depth conversations taking all things into consideration.

Were there liability and insurance issues raised about death and injury?

Not that I know of. There were certainly concerns about death and injury but I don’t think insurance liability was part of the decision process.

Was the right decision made?

I think it was. Surfing waves like that is all about preparation. In the past if the swell got that big the event would run at Restaurants. That was my thinking so I didn’t pack any monster guns in my quiver. I was lucky enough that Kala Alexander was cool enough to lend me his 8’0″ so I could get out there and have a crack at it. I broke the board in the end so I owe him big time. Not everyone had access to the necessary equipment and that would have meant you got guys out there under-gunned or on unfamiliar boards. That’s just dangerous. When I was paddling out I realised a lot of the big wave guys were wearing those thin life vests. I felt like a dick for not having one. I felt I was risking my life but I also would have been risking the lives of the water patrol had I got in serious trouble.

I think there will be debate about the decision forever. It would have been unreal to see how the top 32 handled it. In Tahiti we can only paddle into the Chopes up until a certain size before we need tow assistance, but at Cloudbreak we know now that with the right equipment we could surf heats in massive swell. I think in the future if we’re presented with the same kind of swell in an event window everyone on tour will be properly prepared and ready to go. - Jed Smith

heres an excuse – “i have an important heat tomorrow, im here to WIN the EVENT, NOT to FREESURF, dont want to uneccessarity risk hurting myself to satisy a bunch of morons on internet forums”… props to those who paddled out, and no disrespect to those who chose not to.

oh, you whingers! talkin’ about the demise of the dreamtour. did you suffer head traumas as children? you clearly don’t remember the good ol’ days of the tour in the nineties. two-foot slop everywhere the boys went. no webcasts. no live feeds. nothing. but now, in 2012, we get to watch 6-8′ cloudbreak, then bigger cloudbreak, then 4-6′ restaurants, then more pumping cloudbreak, all of it live and streaming. and you complain about it? god, i would hate to be your wives. i bet you lazy little cunts never eat pussy. truth be told, you should be thanking your mamas for bringing you into this world and giving you a middle-class existence, which allows you to own a laptop and take days out of your unfulfilled lives to watch the world’s best get shacked off their asses. and as for all the big cocksmen calling out the world tour… what? you woulda been out there, bro? you woulda charged, brah? your dick is this big, huh? right. i bet if i asked your girlfriends, they might tell a different story about your dicks. cause the truth is, there aren’t very many people on the planet who can handle waves like that, and we already know most of their names, don’t we? and i doubt i would recognize any of your names, which leads me to believe you went back to the internet porn soon as the webcast finished for the day, while your wife sat there begging to pleased.

BULLSH*T!!!! Kelly skipped JBay the year before to surf massive Cloudbreak. Everybody saw the pictures and knew what it was capable of. These guys has 2 weeks to prepare while the BROKE big wave guys had just a few days. They easily could have had boards shipped over. FAIL

5.

Run staggered heats like they do for early rounds of Pipeline and for an hour each. Two guys have priority for 30 mins, then next two etc. Everyone is required to show but if they are too scared, and who wouldn’t be?, they don’t have to paddle out. But they do forfeit. Or they can paddle out, take a look, and not catch anything – or try to hop the shoulder of a smaller one. Borrow the boards and borrow the vests, and get out there. Just don’t make me do it – I can’t handle anything over 6-foot.

He even twitted about it.

11h Kelly Slater Kelly Slater ‏@kellyslater
@aaronski74 had boards then saw two 50′ sets as I was gonna paddle out. Just wasn’t in the mood. Gotta trust your gut.

YOU GUYS SHOULD REALLY STOP COMPARING BIG WAVE SURF TO COMP SURF. ….

2.

as if “you’ll be ready next time”.
fuck off greasy with your 80 standard 5’11″s
bunch of pussies.

    3.

Were you out there? You’ve charged 20+ Cloudbreak? Is Shredder really your name? Pussy.

      4.

this admission could be used in court.

the people vs ASP… we want a contest next time.

to the joker RP who posted above, you sick twisted freak, what do you know about those who have surfed big waves? you can’t figure it out can you?

5.

10.

You guys are a bunch of winging idiots.

The ASP made the right decision in postponing the competition.

Firstly, the fiji event can be held at cloudbreak or restaurants. Restaurants can be perfect at even just 3-4ft. Cloudbreak as we have witnessed can be perfect at 30 ft. When restaurants is 3-4ft surfers would ride boards from 5’8 to 5’11 or 6’0. When cloudbreak was 30 ft some surfers were riding 10 x 3 1/2 x 21. Every surfer needs a back up board. So surfers would need boards ranging from 5’8 – 10. Even by stepping up two inches for each board in that range, that’s around 30 + boards, plus back up would be around 60 +. You guys are fucking kidding.

Secondly, the big wave surfers were much more prepared. They come with the right quiver, scientifically made life vests and two oxygen supplies. In addition to that surfers were also wearing impact padding around certain parts of their body. Do you think the average ASP surfer would travel with all of this? I highly doubt it.

Idiots.

    11.

what are you stupid or something?why would they need 30 back up board?it was only one day of good xxl swell, the only thing they needed is two or three guns, that’s it!
and with all due respect, they had a lot of time to prepare for these swell, God, you say it like it came out of the blue!surfline frickin tracked this swell before the comp even started, and they were alot before the comp in fiji!
I seriously don’t mind about the decision, either would have been good and perfect, but it would be seriously interesting see the best surfers in the world handle the best waves in the world, isn’t it how it should be?think about it…
Also, i just don’t understand…pipeline is not dangerous?teahupoo is not dangerous?so why cloudbreak is so god damm special all of a sudden?!now don’t tell me “it was a lot bigger” and other crap like these, because the risks stay the same:the risk is the shallowness of the riff and it is the same in the spots i mentioned, actually i think cloudbreak is even less dangerous.all needed was a safety vest and that’s it, you can charge.
    THEY JUST CHICKENED OUT…

      12.

i think what he was saying if it happened to be anywhere in between 10/15-30 foot, that there would be a huge range of boards to have for ideal performance paddling in at CB. its not like “oh its 2ft i’ll surf my 5’10″ “oh its 8ft i’ll surf my 6’0″

      13.

You ever been there smartass? And it’s a reef not a riff…. Get a clue. They stop contests at Pipe when it maxes out too…. Same with Chopes last year…. So let’s see you charge it big mouth…

      14.

If you asking the difference between Pipe, Cloudbreak, and Chopes then you shouldn’t be asking the question. Until you’ve been to all those countries and surfed those breaks, you have no idea.
Making judgement calls after the fact is a joke and standing on a soap box as you are while doing so is even more foolish. The top 32 are competitive surfers and yes, if they want to win, they need a heap of boards. Not one of them would just so happen to throw in the odd 9’8″ into their bag “just in case”.
In the end, it was in everyone’s best interests to let the big wave guys do what they did, especially Volcom. Now their event will be associated with an epic swell and the big wave guys benefited from global exposure than only the ASP can provide.
Next time you run your mouth, be willing to huck your self over the ledge with all the “Chickens”.

      15.

time to call a spade a spade.

time to call a b1tch, a b1tch. get out there and surf next time.
oh wait, you have no problem “surfing” 1 foot huntington pier slop in front of thousands.

get your bra straight and your panties zipped.

      16.

@Yoni: Who are you to say that anyone “chickened out”? Making an intelligent decision in a life threatening environment is not “chicken”. Don’t spout off about other people’s wisdom. The only question is: would you have surfed? I wouldn’t have, unless I had an 8′ board I had really dialed in on big waves. It’s a bit challenging for me to switch from a 6’1″ to a 7’1″ gun… I wouldn’t feel prepared to make the bigger step up to an 8′ or 9′ board. Especially in waves that barrelled like Cloudbreak, which I have surfed on a 7′ board, in double overhead conditions. Triple overhead plus is a totally different realm. Go there, and then spout off, eh?

    17.

lots of guys were charging without life vests. + there was jet ski assist. the world tour of surfing, there is no excuse for not being prepared for perfectly ridable surf because you didn’t bring enough boards, which they get free.

      18.

heres an excuse – “i have an important heat tomorrow, im here to WIN the EVENT, NOT to FREESURF, dont want to uneccessarity risk hurting myself to satisy a bunch of morons on internet forums”… props to those who paddled out, and no disrespect to those who chose not to.

        19.

yep true that. the right call was made… in all professional sports, its good to see a corporate organization like the ASP put it’s athletes first. look at the NFL… they milk those guys dry for 3-5 years until they have nothing left, then throw them out with no safety net.
respect to the boys that paddled out, still put on a hell of a show an took the gamble themselves. the rest of the internet haters can go back to grovelling in 2-3ft mush and drinking more than you actually surf.

    20.

scientifically made life vests?? the fact you called their vests ‘scientifically made’ proves your argument is luke warm.
There are many good arguments on both sides of the pill but you my friend have made none.
    - go back to school

    21.

Well maybe they should travel prepared. It’s not like the swell came from nowhere. We knew it was going to be big for nearly 2 whole weeks. Have a look at what the old school guys ( Tom Carroll, Gerry Lopez etc) used to paddled out in with no assistance. John John, the hobgoods and others went out. If your being payed the big dollars like in any other dangerous sport, to be recognized as the best your life may be put on the line. In my opinion your argument about 30 boards is completely overblown. No one goes up in increments of 2″ when it starts getting really big. They should have held the comp

22.

They should have asked Kieren to make the call! Actually, as I didn’t spy old pumpkin nuts out there I assume there were other massive hollow waves on offer somewhere nearby.

23.

no wrong. Shallow water is one thing, hold downs is another. Guys with two life vests were getting held down for two waves sometimes. And yea surfline picked the swell but they can often be wrong. What if it is 10 ft smaller then predicted then all of a sudden its 15 ft. Then they don’t need their 9-10 footers. They need their 7-8 footers. And then what if the comp runs the next day and its all of a sudden 10 ft and they are riding 6.5-7 footers. And then the next day they run and its 5ft restaurants? Oh now they need there normal boards. Thats about 20 boards right there. Stupid

    24.

5’10 x3, 6’0-6’2 x3, 6’8 x1, preferred gun 7-9′ x1 or 2… There’s 9 boards capable of riding anything from 2′ – 20′+. Seeing as its a powerfully wave they should use their brains and get a thick glass job to reduce snappages. They all knew the forecast, should’ve been prepared. If they want more, well fuck, they’re getting paid enough to afford the extra baggage charges.

    25.

kohole came to oz with ore than twenty boards. Stupid.

26.

if u think they made the wrong call ur an idiot, nobody wants to watch raoni and kai trade off shoulders when they can watch the best big wave freesurfers in the world go for it at macking cloudbreak on a FREE webcast, ur probally only hating cuz u didnt see it, if u watched the freesurf u kno they made the right call.

    27.

i have ridden 30+ waves, a high technical degree, and have a decent iq… who’s the idiot?

      28.

you are the idiot mate. who cares if youve ridden 30+ waves? Ive ridden a couple of thousand but i still wouldnt want to surf 15ft cloudbreak. im stoked i got to watch the big wave guys do their thing. its the armchair critics who are blowing up. how many of the top 34 have come out and said “we should have run it”??

        29.

hey, mate? yeah, gudday… idiot. im not from prison country.
where were you that day? i was on a plane. you were in oz napping with one hand in a jar of vaseline. sleep well with the kangaroos.

      30.

      pics or gtfo

        31.

what kind of pics do you want of me?

do you want me in backless chaps and a cowboy hat?

32.

“but at Cloudbreak we know now that with the right equipment we could surf heats in massive swell”… what a lie, they’ve ALWAYS known that, knew it well enough to run 2 heats. i don’t know if they’re actually dumb or think we’re all dumb. well before the contest we knew this huge swell was coming, anyone who came unprepared, and wasn’t prepared by the swell, just wanted an excuse. p.s. it was ridiculous that the freesurf broadcast ended hours before it was over

    33.

oh the FREE BONUS broadcast of an UNEXPECTED FREE SURF was only 3 hours long or whatever! fuck off, im happy with what i saw, i appreciate it that they actually continued to broadcast it. i dont think they broadcasted tow in day at chopes and that was in the middle of the comp (apoligies if im incorrect, cant remember).

    34.

Well ya you are kinda dumb if you don’t understand the logistics of what it takes to get on and off of the scaffolding, during a large swell at high tide and then at low tide the walk over the reef…. Getting the cameras off the roof etc before sunset. Expensive equipment and safety of the crew versus maybe another hour… Not hours….They actually continued it as long as they could. Say what you think you know but it’s pretty obvious you’ve never been there with that comment

      35.

      can i say

      http://stabmag.com/kellys-fiji-quiver/

      36.

oh yah holding a camera, on a boat, in the channel is just too logistically complicated. go suck asps di k

37.

Eddie would have gone… That is all that has to be said

    38.

    Kolohe left.

39.

Question: Do you directly pay the ASP/contest sponsor to watch these contests on the Internet? No. So why act like the Volcom/ASP/the surfers owe you something? They owe you nothing, not when it’s free for you to sit on your ass and watch in the comfort of your home. Ridiculous argument.

When you have people (who know what they’re talking about) bringing death into the equation as to whether they should run the contest, then it’s pretty obvious what the end result will be.

    40.

    spanky,
its pretty obvious you get on all fours for an industry ceo.
assume the position spanky. take it spanky, good spanky.

      41.

No Karma, I don’t get on all fours for nobody, that is my point exactly.

Nobody owes you shit in this world don’t you get that? If you want to change things then you have to get involved and be heard, or you could just sit back and criticise everyone else who is trying to actively do things.

      And to #42:
I am not saying whether the webcast should be free or not, if there was a small fee for each comp I would probably pay it if I knew the waves were going to be good. You have to pay for things in this world that have any real value or substance, and this is my point. Seems like people on here just complain about the calls being made, who didn’t paddle out, bad webcast, bad commentators etc. etc. All these things stem back to people that are getting this whole deal for FREE, and yet they still whine and complain about it. If you want everything to be great and perfect, the tour needs more money, which might involve a NON-FREE webcast, just one aspect.

So over this Fiji deal now, so much hype and bullshit.

        42.

spanky, you have no pull on this board.. until you produce a photo of yourself, you are another half-wit troll. get it together and post a pic of yourself stand on a rubber raft to legitimize yourself.
i am talking to you spanky… you get it? off the message boards, you are a hipster kook that attempts to impress others. clown boy.

          43.

Yeh my aim in life is to have ‘pull’ on a message board…ha

          44.

Spanky once sold Slaters Hotel room number to fat chicks when he would rock up on the Goldy. Hes not all bad.

      45.

Industry CEO, really? I do not work in the Surf industry and have no desire to. I enjoy watching the whole show like most other people, from a pure surf performance perspective. When people surf, I watch. When they call off the comp, I get on with my life.

46.

@stab forum hater: you guy can’t even read the title of this article, fanno tell he and his mate will ready next time and i bet he won’t bring 30 boards..3 guns that’s ok boy

    47.

no, its not. i was on a plane. where were you?

      48.

I was actually piloting your plane, and the hostesses told me about you, your awful cologne and ther fact that you annoyed everybody with fake surf stories. Don’t come back on our lines, mate.

        49.

i didn’t see a 3 foot midget aborigine .. so you are mistaken, you must not have been piloting the plane.

i already know your kind: talk big on the internet and do nothing when it counts. you sit in the channel, while other guys can take a drop. you are another troll on this site. go get’em tiger. aussie goon.

50.

Fair call about the free webcast, didn’t think about it that way. It’s amazing how much people are complaining about a free webcast… Don’t like, don’t watch… Most importantly don’t complain.

51.

@spanky& jarrod: free or pay webcast is not the question(of course thanks to volcom& asp to let it free) we are talking for the sport of surfing and the call

52.

A once in a lifetime opportunity was missed. They had plenty of notice. I understand that they were not prepared but they should have been. Every surfer just needed a vest and one or two big guns. The reputation of the tour has definitely been lowered because they did not run in arguably the best surf ever seen.

    53.

no excuses… now they have started owning up to the truth.

54.

“We’ll be ready next time” /// As Kelly said on a post-heat interview: “yesterday was one of these days that could literally never happen again”.

55.

Why does everyone seem to think they are big wave heros…. Did no one actually hear Kelly break it down as to why it was a good call? Or the fact that with 2 guys in the water unless heats were at least an hour long, you would guys catching maybe 1 wave with jet ski assist. The area is so big out there to cover it would have made lining up super difficult. With a rapidly rising swell with each set getting bigger and moving further out it would be like a needle in a haystack. It’s easy with 50 guys covering the lineup to see where to be…. Try that by yourself with 20′+ waves coming in and who knows how much bigger the next set would be…… And if call BS you’ve never surfed CB

56.

WHERE WAS BRUCE?! please someone.

57.

“everyone on tour will be properly prepared and ready to go.” EVERY FORECAST WAS CALLING THIS SWELL TO BE HUGE A WEEK BEFORE IT STARTED. Everyone on tour knew and wasn’t willing to face the harsh truth. Wankers. Worst call ever in “professional” surfing, I’m done with watching that online trash.

    58.

how come you weren’t there, JOB?

59.

Why not a contest in a contest? Should have given a bone to who surfed best when the contest was off so some of the guys that live for the big chit can have a chance to get paid too.

60.

Weel, simple. I felt like tweeting instead of surfing. That’s what I do now that I have proved myself as one of the biggest loser of all time.

61.

where’s the photos of tavi rights?
no doubt that’s where everyone with a brain would have been surfing. fuck dealing with 100 footers on the head.

62.

oh, you whingers! talkin’ about the demise of the dreamtour. did you suffer head traumas as children? you clearly don’t remember the good ol’ days of the tour in the nineties. two-foot slop everywhere the boys went. no webcasts. no live feeds. nothing. but now, in 2012, we get to watch 6-8′ cloudbreak, then bigger cloudbreak, then 4-6′ restaurants, then more pumping cloudbreak, all of it live and streaming. and you complain about it? god, i would hate to be your wives. i bet you lazy little cunts never eat pussy. truth be told, you should be thanking your mamas for bringing you into this world and giving you a middle-class existence, which allows you to own a laptop and take days out of your unfulfilled lives to watch the world’s best get shacked off their asses. and as for all the big cocksmen calling out the world tour… what? you woulda been out there, bro? you woulda charged, brah? your dick is this big, huh? right. i bet if i asked your girlfriends, they might tell a different story about your dicks. cause the truth is, there aren’t very many people on the planet who can handle waves like that, and we already know most of their names, don’t we? and i doubt i would recognize any of your names, which leads me to believe you went back to the internet porn soon as the webcast finished for the day, while your wife sat there begging to pleased.

    63.

    response of the day. hahahahahah

    64.

stoked you bring up “old days” check out my breakdown:

SOOOOOOO after reading just about EVERY comment on EVERY website covering THE Fiji EVENT! people seem compelled to compare Pro Surfing Toady to Pro Surfing Yesterday. SO let’s compare then shall we: during PRO SURFING YESTERDAY (PSY) pros had a total wave count of 6, 5 ,4 and 3 before it became the 2 we know and love. Fought each other on beach before/during/after heat(s). Surfed Drunk/Stoned/High/or combo of all 3 during heat(s). Had crazy paddle battles that had nothing to do with actual wave riding, & usually resulted in blown waves or sitting too deep, etc. Oh yeah, most of heats were 20-25 mins! AND NO JETSKI assist – so less surfing all around. PRO SURFING TODAY (PST): 30 min heats, priority (except 3 man heats), 2 waves count, sober surfers (for good or bad – your call) Sportmanship (for most part) AND BEST SURFING EVER in HEATS! Let’s not even try to compare the two – they are just way too different. One thing I do love about PSY is the rail work those guys laid down – looks like PST might be coming around to that way of surfing. Let’s hope so.
cheers! CB live cast was ALL TIME.

    65.

first contest ever at pipe, no leashes, no jet skis. look how far pro surfing’s come! -backwards

    66.

“i would hate to be your wives”

    Right! Me too.

    67.

And it’s not about dick, it’s about balls, as my girldfriends told you.

I admit I have to screens, one for surf, the other for porn, and my wife usually leave the house and never beg ME to be pleased… I’ll quit surfing.

    68.

You seem to like dicks jojo.

69.

ALL THE TOP ASP SURFERS PROBABLY TRAIN HARDER THAN THE BIG WAVE MEN SO THAT’S A POOR EXCUSE.
1 THEY HAVE TRAINERS AND A SUPPORT TEAM.
2THEY ALL UNDERSTOOD THIS SWELL WAS COMING 2WEEKS BEFORE IT CAME SO BOARDS SHOULD HAVE BEEN THERE.
3 THE ASP WOULD HAVE LOOKED A SUPER JOKE IF SOME OF THE ASP BOYS WOULDN’T HAVE TAKEN OFF.
4PRETTY SURE COMPANYS LIKE RIPCURL COULD NOT AFFORD TO HAVE GUYS LIKE MEDINA GO OUT AND NOT CATCH A WAVE IN A HEAT.
5CHOPS IS NEXT PRAY FOR A 10ft SWELL THAT CAN BE SURFED WITH ARMS SOME GUYS NEED TO EARN THERE STRIPES.

70.

AH AND IF OLD PRICKS LIKE ROSS CLARK JONES AND TOM CARROLL CAN STILL RIDE MASSIVE WAVES AND SURVIVE THEN ALL THE YOUNG ASP PROS THAT DIDN’T WANT TO GO ARE WEAK AND SHOULD GO DO AIRS IN A WAVE POOL IN ASIA SOME WHERE AND LET THE TOUR FILL UP WITH REAL ALL ROUNDERS LIKE
KERR\ JOHN JOHN\ AND CO.

71.

ALSO A COUPLE OF YEARS BACK THE SUNSET PRO (WQS) WAS HELD IN 15-20ft WAVES PRETTY SURE YOU CAN GET A TWO WAVE HOLD DOWN OUT THERE.
BUT THEY NEED TO PROVE THEM SELF’S (WQS) DON’T THEY.
BUT SO DOSE HALF THE WCT AGAIN NOW.

72.

Everyone else has made a comment so I may as well sound like a quincy, however I couldn’t care less either way but at least they showed all the footage. So many whinging hags on these threads that’s so hot ;)

73.

everyone who sucks asp dik keeps justifying that it was too big. GET REAL! ASP OFFICIAL EXCUSE = “bad wind only getting worse”, as people were getting the rides of their lives and it was getting better every minute.

ASP lied, and you love it. probably the same people that get their worldview from tv news. EVEN IF UR HAPPY CALLED OFF, don’t promote lying.

of course i enjoyed the freesurf broadcast. but i tuned in to watch sporting competition. the event was a sham. too bad media didn’t win the whole thing on a square tail. JJ and co should start their own surf tour in perfect PADDLEABLE ocean waves of all sizes. and Media and co. should start their wavepool tour. don’t get me wrong medina’s incredible, but lines are being drawn. AND ONE IS MORE ENTERTAINING TO WATCH.

TIME FOR ASP TO CLARIFY ITS MISSION STATEMENT

74.

MARK HEALEY CALLS IT LIKE IT IS:

“If it was a ‘devil wind, I would have never paddled out immediately after [the contest] was called off.”

Mark Healey is not sympathetic when asked why the WCT surfers failed to bring big enough boards: “I think that 75 percent of [all of the Tour surfers, not just those slated to surf on Friday] straight-up didn’t want anything to do with it.”

“It may have been a missed opportunity [for the ASP], but there’s definitely a chance that, had it run, a lot of surfers that are considered the best in the world would have looked really dumb,” says Healey. “And that wouldn’t have been good for the WCT either.”

75.

“don’t get me wrong medina’s incredible”

That’s fucking bullshit. You’re a racist prick. Only about 5 WT guys were out there, Slater wasnt one of them, and you keep mentioning an 18 yold kid.

Rounded surfer and you put Kerr on the list? Fuck you, man. Kerr is JBay or any long/perfect waves is just pathetic and I do love Kerr surfing and he seems like a nice guys. But truth be told, Master in barrell and airs, not in perfect waves.

Really easy to be tough on the internet. Why werent you there?

No one is defending ASP, but I would like to see if Raoni is gonna get an injured wild card next year for running his heat. Prob not. So whay the fuck would someone jeopardize it’s entire year just so a prick could sit on his couch and rant about it on the internet. This guys have their whole year to make something, most of them do not make that much money as you think (not everyone can be a Fanning or a Parko in terms of financial support). Bede two year blank board rings any bell?

E.g. Wildcard William Cardoso received 8k for his participation. Just to get to Fiji and pay for it costed him well over 12k.

Go grab a fucking dick and sit because you sure as hell has never been on a board.

It’s just fucking stupid trying to compare guys that go year after year training to these conditions (like Mr. Pathetic Mark “Have to Catch the Attention in Anyway I Can” Healey) to guys that need to be specialized in almost every aspect of surfing.

Get real, bro. You don’t belong in the ocean. Try motorbike or soccer instead.

    76.

anyone who calls mark healey “mr. pathetic” is a straight kook, nothing else to say

    77.

i’m using medina as an example because he made it all the way to the finals, on a square tail…. gotta wonder would that happen if they all actually surfed the ridable, paddleable, rippable, big waves? and since you mention racism… medina and miguel pupo are the saving grace of brazilians, who otherwise displayed the ugliest transition style on tour. glad they can break that barrier.

    78.

Hey dumb arse what’s the point of having comps at waves like cloudbreak if it get real and they will not surf and if a i keep mentioning a 18year old KID because he can’t surf waves like that then maybe he’s not ready to be the best in the world and should have spent a few more years training in waves like that so the next time it happens they will not call the comp off because KIDS can’t surf it.
WCT supposed to be the best in the world MOHAMED DUMB ARSE.

79.

ROSS CLARK JONES AND TOM CARROLL

They probably started to surf way before Medina/JJ/Kolohe were even born. Big Waves surf demands experience; not wonder why JJ is the only youngster to nail it.

I bet your ass you wouldnt send you kid in 2M+ waves just so he can man up.

Retarded.

    80.

Yep you said it Mohamed John john is the only one to nail it.
So your saying Medinas not ready I hear you.

81.

1 THEY HAVE TRAINERS AND A SUPPORT TEAM.

kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk. You’re thinking every surfer is Kolohe or Taj. Get outta of your fucking computer and go surf. You’re not touching base with the Earth.

82.

Surf ahs now become basketball and all guys earn as much as Lebron.

83.

And not the cherry on the top of the cake. It probably wont hit the news, but who cares? Are you the couch surfers full of hate?

“One of the four surfers to compete that morning, Brazilian Raoni Monteiro, injured a knee ligament in a heavy wipeout and may be out for the rest of the year”.
By The Australian.

How nice! So Raoni, a blank board surfer with wife and two small kids is almost off the tour for rest of the year (may I remind you all that we are still on june?). As he’s a blank boarder, he probably wont get the wildcard for next season. Politics they call it.

And even if he does get this wildcard, he just killed his entire year (financialy wise) and now is going to be broke till he recovers.

All that just for the amusement of the hatefull couch surfers and it’s media (you’re included, Stab).
Pay him a visit in Saquarema and ask his enfants how they are feeling now that daddy is broke. As he’s no Fanning or Parko, please bring some rice along as he probably gonna need it.

Bunch of pathetic internet groupies.

    84.

raoni monteiro was reckless on his wave, he tried to pull out the doggy door for the score. pipe and chopes are PLENTY DANGEROUS AND COULD END CAREERS AT ANY MOMENT, what do you have to say about that??????????????????????????

    85.

Hahah your very protective of Brazilians you must be one.
Again I am talking about ones surfing be it a braz a aussie or some one from mars Mohamed you kook.
You don’t think that waves surfed at PIPE last year were not as heavy as the one Raoni surfed at cloudbreak and the same could not have happened there.
YOUR A VERY DUMB MAN OR GIRL MOHAMED.

86.

WCT vs. Big Wave? Two different sports two different kinds of athletes. The right bunch of guys were out that day!

87.

Can’t Wait for little Jack robin to get on the tour that 13 year old would have surfed cloudy that day.
Medina needs to take off on the boil at pipe this year if it gets big and not shoulder hop little barrels to get through heats.
If medina one a title now it would be frowned on if john john won people would respect it.

88.

WON

89.

I remember reading a Kelly interview maybe 6-7 years ago in which he was asked to comment on the state of professional surfing and he said something such as (can’t quote): the WCT surfers not only are the best surfers in perfect waves, but they are also the best when it comes to any conditions, the best in airs, the best in tube ridding, the best in small waves and the best in big wave surfing. There really is the feeling that WCT has pushed every single one of us to excel thoroughly in the sport.

People here seem to be highly critical of the brazilians on tour and I am too because they represent everything that’s wrong with the criteria changes the ASP went on to introduce.

90.

Hahahahaa. Trying to compare Pipe or Tchopo to Restaurant just shows me that you haven’t surfed any of those waves. Dude, read a book, grab a beer, jerk off, just stay away from the ocean, you don’t belong in it…. and you go further in telling that Raoni tried the easy way out. You must be a SUPer…. Fucking kook.

As for the brazzo part, I will try reveal that. Tell you what, burn the flags. Think of any workers (black, latin, martian) that have to pay to surf waves that can easily putting him down for the rest of the season (aka no income), Will you do it?

Not everyone is Kolohe. Only 5 to 8 surfers make reasonable money in the tour. The rest is signed up for the season, unlike your Big Waves guys that are paid to surf Big Waves (big props for that) and are not going to be broke case of injured….Wake up!

    91.

didn’t say anything about restaurants. i said pipe and chopes are incredibly dangerous and can end careers, and lives, even on flawless days. pipe has had more deaths than any other spot, combined, so i guess you want that off the tour too??? glad we could get that straight.

and boo hoo what a sob story about the financial struggles of top pro surfers. ITS A SPORT, injury is a risk, and raoni was reckless on his wave, i don’t know how you equate reckless with “tried the easy way out”??? i understand english might be your second language and i respect that but you should read more slowly or something. p.s. defer to “joker” statement about the knees.

ocean isn’t a kiddy pool, i expect the supposed worlds best surfers to be challenged to ride the worlds best waves, in competition. that’s the point of a contest. if they don’t want to paddle out and risk, then don’t… that would separate the men and true surfers from the gymnastics quickly -which should at least happen in a few contests.

btw, are you brazilian? sorry whites are racist there, but that’s not the case in america. we don’t hate brazilian tour surfers cus they’re dark, we hate them cus they have an aggro ugly style, especially in transitions. except miguel pupo and gabriel medina -kudos to them. p.s. at cloudbreak half of world tour surfers can handle the heat! the whole point of the tour is to determine the worlds best surfer, includes perfect big, 100% paddleable waves, to see who can handle the heat. but i guess you just wanna wipe their ass and give them welfare

92.

Hhahah what are you talking about who is comparing pipe or chops to restaurants what are you on about.
And by the way your poor raoni has already made 43’000 dollars this year and will near the 100’000 even if he doesn’t surf in any more events.
You are with out a doubt the dumbest confused moron I have ever come across.
AKA no income get your facts right Mohamed you IDIOT.

93.

Hahhahahah still laughing about the garbage that’s pooring out of you mouth Mohamed.

94.

Tour guys had better stop doing airs as well Mohamed just in case they fk there knees.
Your so dumb so dumb Mohamed.

95.

u

96.

Run the comp. pull out if scared, or scared of injury. Earn respect from the real surfers out there that know, or at least have some idea, of what it takes to surf that super heavvvvyyy shit. No excuses we all know that, wasted opportunity for asp. I for one would like to see what the tour guys can do in that sort of surf.

97.

Other pro sports have regular risks to body and limb:
Moto gp, F1, Cliff diving, Free diving, Moto x…
It’s what makes it interesting. Perhaps if the tour was held solely in waves of consequence surfing would have a huge global audience?

    98.

dude look at the nba, derrik rose tore his acl on his own… it’s an inherent risk in sports, and the more reckless and aggro you get, the more likely injury

99.

ASSP: Association of Smallwave Surfers. +their king hails form florida!

100.

And I’m still laughing at your weak mind. Not everything is black and white, dickhead. You make it sound like it’s was all about the danger/waves. Again, wake up. I’m just pointing that there are other factors to take in consideration. Many other factors.

And Jeremy… Of course Pipe has a higher Kill Rate. It’s way more popular and it’s been surfed for many years now. But do you seriouly think it’s more dangerous than Tchopo or Restaurants at a big day? Don’t agree.
As for Derek Rose… We’ll he gets paid millions an year, so a broken finger may not seem like a bad deal… facing death? thats another thing.
Not defeding brazzos or any shit. I dont see surfing as “country game”. I dont have to be Serbian or Spanish to cheer for Djokovic or Alonso, so I simple dont care if a guy comes from anywhere. He might as well come from hell and I still wouldnt give a shit. I like to see good surfers and that’s about it. Surely I would like to see a comp in those waves, but I’m simple pointing out: You get 8k as the worst outcome of an event, but spends well over 12k. So do the math. Would you really be glad to injure yourself when you still have the whole season to chase? At such an amateur sport as pro surfing is, I surely wouldn’t.
Let’s be honest, they live a great life. Chose that. Congrats, but I’m at 28 with only a bachelor degree make more money than the majority of the guys there and I dont think I make that good of money at all.

101.

Again Mohamed if you think RESTAURANTS is heavier than PIPE then it shows how stupid you really are.
You need to stop writing because if you think a wave which is similar to waves you would find around say INDONESIA even comperes to PIPE it shows how little you know about waves or surfing in-general.
RESTAURANTS is a long hollow wave on a shallow reef yep it can smash you but it’s the type of waves your every day punter would love a crack at think GLAND\ MACARONIS and any barreling wave 6ft over can be intimidating but RESTAURANTS IS NOT PIPE FOOL.
PIPE IS NOT YOU RETARD PIPE IS A WHOLE DIFFERENT BALL GAME.
I can tell you live a couple of hours away from the beach and drive down for a surf if it’s under 6ft on the weekends 6ft is probably 15ft in your mind any way.
BACHELOR DEGREE HAHAHAHAH WHO GIVES A FUCK DO YOU THINK THAT TELLING US THAT WILL GIVE YOU MORE CRED.
And if your so rich (hahah) I don’t think so why don’t you sponsor Raoni.
Your a informed kook Mohamed best keep riding your mal on the gentle point you visit once a week and keep telling every one that Restaurants is heavier than pipe.
HAAHAHHAAHHH BACHELOR DEGREE WHAT????????????

102.

And I hope you don’t think RESTAURANTS is CLOUDBREAK because that would make you look even DUMBER Mohamed.

103.

We got 2 see the best of both worlds. In a heat only a few waves would have been surfed per heat.Instead we got to see the worlds best big wave guys put on a clinic ! A amazing show! Be thankful volcom spent the 500+ an hour to let us see the whole free surf!

104.

Hi mike your missing the point. Thankful i am but me and thousands of other people were tuning in for the comp.
I wanted to watch the top 34 surfers that i follow every year every comp Surf that day.
And many of the top 34 wanted to surf but where denied because of some who would not and sorry I would have rather have watched them surf than the other crew.
If i want to watch randoms and some charge waves of death i can walk down the road and watch them at SHIPSTERN BLUFF.

105.

The ASP were at cloudbreak For a world tour comp it got big perfect and it was doable and they canned it.
So It should have been on the 50+guys who did surf where laughing all the way to the bank some of them so called big wave men and some of them not.
Days like that should still be on if others still want to surf there heats the others should just FORFIT the comp.
Would be shit if it happend at pipe and john john and medina were in the final going for a world title but medina could not surf it so they moved it some where smaller so medina could surf and he won it that would be a joke.
Think that’s the point a lot of people are trying to say.

106.

Mike that’s the spin that’s been put out there, don’t buy into that shit. Sure I enjoyed it too, but I would have enjoyed watching the wct guys take it on MORE. No disrespect to the hell men that took it on, we all know the guys fucken charge and charged it that day, what we don’t know, or what we would like to know, is which ct guys can perform in those conditions.

107.

SO I mistyped Restaurant for Cloudbreak. Seriously, you couldnt tell? Tve been talking about Cloudbreak since topic one.
Are you that dumb or just trying very hard?

108.

Who said anything about being rich or trying to look cool with a degree? Man, you shouldnt have dropped out of the high school. Again, just pointing out. Any dumbass such as myself make way more money than the majority of the tour. Simple as that.

109.

Again with your misguided hate against Medina. Did he fuck your mother in the ass?
Grow up, bro. Try to get laid or something. There is always hookers on the table, just save some bucks. You really need to relax.

110.

Hahah you didn’t know Restaurants was not cloudbreak look who is getting all personal now you can’t handle the truth can you Mohamed. The fact that your getting so defensive now shows a lot Mohamed. Usually when some one gets this defensive it’s because they can’t admit there wrong.
Grow up hahah who just wrote something about fucking some ones mother up the ass.
I NEED TO RELAX CHECK THE VOMIT SPEWING OUT OFF YOUR SO CALLED EDUCATED MOUTH.
YOUR ALL CLASS MOHAMED

111.

And if you did know anything about surfing you would understand the Medina\john question is a legit one but you don’t Mohamed you don’t.

112.

i am naked, spread-eagle, now what?

113.

mohamed should not be able to post here, go back to the desert mate

114.

The only barrels Mohamed sees are the caves he hides in give up buddy.

115.

The event should have been held. JonJon would have dominated and won the even hands Down.
The aussie bloke would not even have paddled-out for their heat.

116.

Fucken Jon Jon never heard of him but what a gay name , listen girls, i live at Noosa and i charge waves this size all the time… mainly at main beach and between the rock groynes. Granted they are rights but it’s seriously not that hard i don’t know what all the fuss is about, my gun works great out there but i don’t know why people keep referring to it as a Log?. The fact is though, if i was getting paid money to surf, getting free travel, boards, clothes, getting to root smoking young hotties i would charge like a fricken hawaiian lifeguard on high grade south american blow just to hopefully keep the dream alive.Pros, Get a bag of cement pour it over yourselves and harden up, cause all of your days on tour are numbered.

117.

i read how kelly said he didnt go out cos he had a “bad feeling in his gut” (or somethin)
I think that feeling is called fear, we all get it.
Furthermore – I cant help but feel a little ripped off, remember how flores changed alot of opinions after charging chopes last year?
After all the talk about certain guys on tour not being any good in bigger waves i wouldve thought it was a massive chance for them not just to prove themselves, but to challenge themeselves in theyre chosen craft.
crying shame
