Introducing Colin Herlihy and his 1937 finless "hot curl". Film: Papa Herlihy
Wanna See A Guy Go Finless On Hawaiian Outer Reefs?
Of course you do!
I'll be the first to admit that I know very little of historical surf crafts. As far as I'm concerned we went from wood to fiberglass, from long to short, and finally they work. Why look back at our previous failings?
Well a guy named Colin Herlihy feels differently. He's so passionate about ye sticks of olde that he set out to ride them, no matter how objectively bad or antiquated, all over Hawaii and beyond. While I can't connect with Colin's mindset, I sympathize with his cause. Somebody's gotta remember where we came from.
This outer reef session was surfed by Colin on a 1937 finless "hot curl", shaped by Jim Phillips. I'd say he does a pretty good job swinging the old hunk of lumber.
