Reading Time: 3 minutes
Mason swears 19.2x per hour. Photo by Sam Moody.

1st place: Mason Ho

Wave count: 13

Completion rate: 38.4%

Board choice: 83% alt, 17% hifi

Curse words: 32

Best quote/s: “Hishaw”

“Oh shit, I just said the name of this spot. Hey guys, check, check, 1, 2, don’t let out the name of this spot, please. Bleep that thing like I cursed or something”

“It’s like fucken Santana live”

“Surfing with Dane brah I’m stalling in this fucker”

“I almost made that thing, big old flopper”

“That was freakin Mario Cart, bro”

“What up Pop, sorry i’m not on a 4 fin”

“Brah that was the darkest hole to rainbow mist. That’s when you know its mystical out here”

“Oooh yeah baby. Oooh Yeah.”

“I hope you didn’t record that shit. You caught me in the bedroom there”

Breakdown: Mason rode a 5’11” Simon Jones with MR twin fins for 85 minutes. It featured a flat rocker and a channel bottom for extra hold and security. For the remaining 17 minutes he rode his magic five-year-old Mayhem, and jagged the score requirement on his last wave with less than 30 seconds on the clock. Mason also won the open-mic contest, where he made shoutouts to family and friends, dropped a lot of sexual innuendos, and cursed at a rate of 19.2x per hour.

Mikey’s completion rate was 23.3% higher than the nearest competitor. Photo by Sam Moody.

2nd place: Mikey February

Wave count: 15

Completion Rate: 73.3%

Board choice: 57% alt, 43% hifi

Curse words: 4

Best quote: “It’s so hard coming in because it looks like you’re claiming your wave.”

Breakdown: Mikey had the most consistent performance of the contest, finishing 73% of the waves he paddled for. Interestingly, he only fell once on his alt board, a round-pin twin with no concave that he rode for 57% of the session. For the remainder, he rode his Two Happy, which he actually looked shakier on.

Dane spent 0% of his time on his performance board, resulting in a third almost by default. Photo by Sam Moody.

3rd place: Dane Reynolds

Wave count: 16

Completion rate: 50%

Board choice: 100% alt, 0% hifi

Curse words: 12

Best quote/s: “There will be way more [waves]. Hopefully. C’mon pulse!”

“Did that weird feathery chandellery thing”

Breakdown: Dane spent 100% of his time on his handshape that he had been working on with Britt Merrick and Andrew Doheny. The board featured a completely flat bottom with no concave, which he rode with small, refined rakey twins and custom baby trailers. He struggled to get it going on his first few waves but eventually found some sections where he threw down the biggest turns of the heat. Because he didn’t ride his backup board, he lost by default.
