Jez surfs great, but sometimes great just ain't good enough! Video: Jacob Vanderwork
Not Quite Pro Feat. Jeremy Carter
What happens to myriad of "almost" surf pros?
Paddle out at Lowers on any given Tuesday, and even during the presumed "school hours", you'll find thirty-plus groms doing stupidly impressive surfing on the inside. These majority of these kids, whose surfing abilities were deemed worthy of forgoing a classroom education, will not make it as professional surfers. This sport is a numbers game and there's just not enough money for 400 tow-headed air-rev specialists.
Jeremy Carter grew up in San Clemente alongside Kolohe, Luke, and Crane-o. He competed in all the NSSAs, had a slew of helpful sponsors, and surfed well enough to turn heads but not quite well enough to make a career out of it. So what'd Jez do? He went to college, got a degree, and has since bounced around a few jobs in the industry. Hardly a bad life, and goddamn, can the kid still surf or what? Maybe "going pro" ain't that important after all.
