Full Frame: The Allure Of Unsurfed Waves And Uncaptured Images

Pete Devries on Vancouver Island, by Marcus Paladino

“I’m stoked you guys are bringing back the Full Frames,” Vancouver Island photographer Marcus Paladino tells me when I pick up the phone. “The first thing I ever got published was a Stab Full Frame, way back in the day. It was a photo of Pete [Devries] doing a reverse with snowcapped mountains in the back. Would’ve been around 2012, at least 10 years ago.”

Like an icier, flipped version of the header image. Photo by Marcus Paladino, 2012(ish).

“Pete and I have gotten a bit bored now, so we’re trying to shoot new places up here with nobody around, just trying to find waves that are aesthetically pleasing. We’ve been exploring more options as opposed to the usual waves, just to mix it up because we’ve been shooting together for so long.”

Though their usual modus operandi is boat trips to hidden bays and fingers of reef, Pete and Marcus have adopted the scourged steeds of San Clemente for closer ventures.

“This particular spot we got e-bikes and started burning on the beach, looking for sandbars. We actually went to this spot a couple of times, just scoping it. We scored a kinda fun session there, California beach-break style, but we were talking about how amazing it would look at sunset. When we went back, the swell was way too big and it was sorta closing out, but the sunset was amazing, so Pete just sent it and tried to get a couple. He happened to find a really nice air section right away and stomped it. After that he didn’t really get much else, so I was pretty hyped we got at least one shot.”

Regarding the possibility of finding untouched setups in the Canadian waters Marcus calls home, he’s unflappably optimistic.

“There are definitely unsurfed waves up here. This last trip we got kinda skunked, so we were just burning around on the boat looking at all these different setups. There was so much potential. It’s just so fickle up here, it’s a matter of being there on the right day. It makes you think about all the old pioneers who spent so much time looking for new waves. This coastline is so expansive, it’s incredible.”
