Winter On The North Shore In 35mm
As our lonely eyes turn away from the miracle, let’s revisit through the lens of Tim Ridenour.
The Spring equinox in the Northern Hemisphere is in a few weeks. Winter on the North Shore is coming to close. The Eddie didn’t run (to no one’s surprise), The Volcom Pipe Pro and Da Hui Backdoor shootout were more exciting than the Pipe Masters (again to little surprise) and once bustling seven-mile strip is returning to it’s quiet, beautiful form. A way back, photog Tim Ridenour sent through a roll of film he shot while staying at the O’Neill house, they’re a glimpse into the laid back, yet testosterone driven lifestyle of winter for professional surfers’ annual voyage. “These pictures were shot on film on the North Shore during the six week waiting period of the Triple Crown,” Tim tells us. “I had the pleasure of staying on the front lines at the O’Neill house, hanging with the team and creating a closer look behind the closed doors of a team house on the North Shore.” Cue the nostalgia and start making predictions for the 2017 tour.

This day Haleiwa was big and gnarly. Here’s Jordy less than stoked after a broken leash mid-heat at the first jewel of the Triple Crown.

The boards just kept coming, but hey one can never have enough quality surfboards for a North Shore season. Here’s Jordy upper deck at the O’Neill house prepping his crafts for gun battle at Sunset.

Seems appropriate that Rocky Point would be found at the end of a rainbow. Coco Ho mid run around at the most rippable wave on the North Shore.

Any visitor to the North Shore knows that some days the stop and go traffic on the Kamehameha can be flat out…

Romance on the North shore was in full swing with team bikini huddles topped off with lingerie weddings.

The boys (Ian Crane and Nick Green) giving high fives to the lingerie groom while checking out the lucky lady behind. This guy was stoked but sweating bullets in his Tux in the Hawaiian heat.

Ladies always good to have a quiver of sexy beachwear on deck when visiting the Hawaiian islands. You never know who’s house you might end up at.

We all went down to see the big man in the Sunset final and he won! Jordy approaching vert on the shaka stoke while chairing to the podium.

On a hot day at the beach park I ran into the World champ and North Shore hero JJF hanging with the groms at the Pyzel board demo. So good to see the North Shore community helping out the kids.

Had the pleasure of chatting with Mitchell about surfboard design, he was on a tear, top shop living at the Volcom house. Here he is making his way back to the Rockies lefts to punt some huge circus air.

Nate Yeomans was hanging with Matt Pagan during November, what a positive crew. We would play phone tag on where the spot was, then meet up just to have the wind come up. But surf or not those guys are always coming with the nonstop comedy.

Ian Crane can be an elusive character, solo surfs at secret spots, scooter missions to Honolulu. But when you link with him there’s for sure gonna be fireworks in the lineup.
