While pro signings and yoga might not be your idea of time well spent between heats or high tide downtimes at the Quiksilver Pro, taking five to enter the draw to win a new surfboard should be. Official sponsor Corona have knocked together a purpose-built shaping bay with a glass wall where you can peep in on some of Australia’s most highly-regarded handshapers doing their thing. They’re also giving away custom boards daily, which will be brought to life in front of your very eyes.
On the tools will be Eden Saul of Dead Kooks, Byron Bay’s Joel Fitzgerald and musician x shaper x surfer x Rhythm founder Neal Purchase Jnr. All that’s required is to roll over to the shaping bay and tap your details into their signup app. At the end of each day they notify the winner and reset the draw, so make it part of your daily ritual to re-enter on the way past. If it’s your lucky day they’ll give you a call and you can cruise down the next day and witness the birth of your new best friend.
“It’s pretty rad, we’ve got 10 week waits on our orders at the moment and someone just shows up and gets a board done the next day,” said Eden. “People have been tripping out seeing what goes into handshaping a board.”
