What’s on Kelly’s Mind, Mid-Injury?
Our beloved champ spills his guts.
What goes on in the mind of a man who, on top of being severely injured, is also facing the end of his career as a professional competitive surfer? Apparently a lot.
Over this hour-point-five podcast (above), Kelly covers topics such as…
Mortality: “I’ve had a lot of close friends die in the past couple years.” “I think dying doing something you love — surfing — isn’t that terrifying.”
What he reads: “I read a lot of news, some of it from alternative sites, a lot of science and technology stuff, but I think human interest stories are the best.”
Diet: “When I was a kid, I ate ice cream for breakfast.”
Self-awareness: “I just try not to sound selfish… or stupid.”
And much, much more!
Now, a brief opinion for those who care. Despite the fact that Kelly and I may not agree on.. everything, it’s important to remind oneself how lucky we are, as surfers, to be led by a man whose knowledge and values are as carefully practiced as his athletic abilities.
We could have easily been stuck with a Floyd Mayweather or Conor McGregor as our GOAT. So while it’s fun to tease Kelly for this and that, one must always consider the (almost inherently worse) alternatives. We’ve got it pretty good with K Slate as our global ambassador.
