You might not have heard of José Gregório before, but know this – he’s a three-time national surf champ in Portugal, is a well-respected big wave surfer and, for the purposes of this, owns the most bitchin’ house in Ericeira. The 300 square metre U House overlooks Saint Lorenzo Bay, and is built on sustainability (with solar panel-heated floor and water, and rainwater harvesting for irrigation among some of the green features).
Designed by architect Jorge Graca Costa for José, his wife and two daughters, the house’s design is reactionary to the prevailing winds of the area. In summer, the wind puffs from the north and, in winter, it hammers with rain from the south. So, the blueprint was based on ancient Mediterranean patio houses, which means an open patio setting that’s protected either side by two long arms. No western views (water!) are lost, nor is any natural light, but you can enjoy ’em both without being blown-away. Slicker than your average beach haus, yes?
