John John Florence Withdraws From The Pipe Masters
“Wishing everyone luck out there!”
Back in Bali, at the fifth event of the year, our two-time and reigning World Champion was struck down with injury. Attempting a frontside-rodeo-of-sorts during the Keramas event (John was knocked in Round 2), John injured both his ACL and LCL, a knee injury which was rumoured to sideline him for the remainder of the season.
We were surprised and elated last month when the WSL announced that John John Florence would be returning to competition at the Pipe Masters, his home turf. This morning, our elation shifted to sorrow as John announced via Instagram that he would be withdrawing from the event.
“Feeling really good to get back in the water the past couple weeks.” The post read. “I think I’m close to 100%, but I’m not there yet. I noticed this week that I still don’t have full trust in my movements, which has always been my test for returning to competition. The Pipe Masters is my favourite contest on tour so its a really difficult decision, but I am going to withdraw from the event. Wishing everyone luck out there!! It has been insane watching everyone send it during this last swell!!”
Unfortunately for John John fans – that being everyone who surfs – we’ll need to wait until late season Pipe, or even next year to see the world’s best surfer competing at Pipe again.
No announcement has been made yet as to John’s replacement, but we’ll update that information as it rolls in.
In the mean time, here’s a flashback to the injury that landlocked the wunderkid in June.
Rest up John, we’re all awaiting your return!
