Photolyfe 2.0: Leroy Bellet
“I’d rather just surf if I’m going to shoot from land.”
Leroy doesn’t see the death of art, he only sees opportunity. While ex-film shooters are only happy when they’re sad about how much the game they once knew has changed, and how hard it is to compete in this epoch, Leroy is double-towing into monstrous waves behind good pal Russell Bierke, capturing some of the most astounding surf imagery ever seen. “I don’t do land stuff, it’s boring,” the dynamic 17-year-old from Australia’s South Coast told Stab. “I’d rather just surf if I’m going to shoot from land. I worked on all aspects of my photography skills until I knew what I was doing, and then decided I wanted to step it up to the double tow, to hopefully make a name for myself. I’d had magazine spreads before the double tow stuff, but nothing like the attention I got after that shot. I’d never had mainstream press, or my email blowing up the way it was after that. I didn’t want to be that stereotypical 16-year-old kid with a GoPro doing the same old stuff. So I definitely went to great lengths to make what I did different.” And, check.
