Hot, Hot Heat And Misty Relief
Gallery: behind the scenes at Day Two of the Surf Ranch Pro.
The sky is ten shades of pink and blue, as a handful of longboarders sneak a few last waves during the WSL’s evening expression session; the ’80s cover band that graced the Tachi Palace stage at last year’s not-so-super-secret Future Classic are setting up in the field behind the VIP section; the entire WCT tour is tipping Cuervo palomas, beat-red and thoroughly gassed as day two of The Surf Ranch Pro comes to a close.
With the Surf Ranch open to general admission ticket holders today, a slightly anemic crowd rolled in to see the show compared to this spring’s Founder’s Cup, the pool’s concrete walls lined with a respectable amount of diehards hanging in the 103-degree heat.
After bailing in the morning in search of coffee, which the WSL somehow failed to account for depite the 8:30am start to the event and no sustenance within miles, Stab returned from a mission to charming-if-desperate nearby town Hanford just in time to catch Griffin Colapinto answer Mikey C’s question as to who, if anyone, was going to give Filipe, Gabby, and Italo chase on the machinated runway.
As the afternoon stretched on, the lubricated if heat-stricken crowd’s engagement ebbed and flowed, bouncing between the patio mist fans and their poolside perches, with crescendo highpoints during Gabriel Medina, Owen Wright, and especially Filipe Toledo’s closing statement, a flared out alley-oop to finner combo.
