Filmlyfe: Shane Fletcher

Welcome back to Filmlyfe, a series of journeys in which we swirl through time and space, and bathe in the blissful technicolor aesthetics that only an auteur can sling. The premise we’re rolling with? Men of the lens answer questions for us with visuals instead of words. It’s all motion. It’s a view into their souls. Like most men of the lens, it all began for Shane Fletcher when his parents bought him a camera during his early teens to get the creative juices flowing. “I got given a Yashica T4 from my mum for my 13th birthday,” says Shane. “It all built from there. I’m only self-taught, but motion images have been my work for the past eight years.” Shane earned his stripes as a freelancer for Network Ten, working on programs like The Project and Sports Tonight. Luckily for us though, his passion for surfing remained buoyant, possibly fueled by his friendship with Noa Deane, and his portfolio is peppered with a plethora of impressive releases, including “Out of Bounds”, which pulled in over 127K views. Despite the ferocity of the surfing that often fills his lens, it’s clear that Shane sees the bigger picture, placing huge emphasis on nailing the perfect composition. Whether he’s in the Middle East or back at home in Kingscliff on the NSW North Coast, you can tell he takes the time to absorb his surroundings before hitting the big red button, which we thoroughly appreciate.
