Watch: Horrendous Weekend Jet Ski Slam At The Wedge
Curious couple’s date ends on the rocks at the Wedge.
With slim-to-zero hours jet ski experience, and against warnings from the Newport Beach Lifeguard Service (and survival instinct), a couple have steered into the impact zone at the Wedge and come unstuck, in a very bad way. The same swell that had us gawking at the Puerto Challenge had been licking the coast of California on Saturday afternoon when this act of idiocy occurred. The (rented) ski can be seen flat-lining southward when the rogue set spikes up behind them. The mountain of Newport foam, which (because, wedge!) bends towards the seawall, seals their only means of escape. The driver, now screwed, continues on a rock-wall trajectory before being engulfed a few metres away from bone-dry seawall.
“Apparently, they were just kind of lost or something, he just drove straight in,” said awesomely-named Newport Beach Marine Safety Captain, Skeeter Leeper, to the OC Register. “They rented a jet ski and they were at the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Luckily for the pair, the Wedge Crew and the Life Guard Service kicked into gear without hesitation, pulling them to safety. “Both would be dead without the Lifeguards and Wedge Crew,” stated local Wedge veteran Mel Thoman. “Period.”
The female rider was admitted to hospital with a minor head injury while the man staggered around clasping a severely bruised ego. After its fatal pounding, the ski’s remains were dragged ashore to be given a proper burial.
