Just Another Glorious Day In WA

Cottesloe’s Ocean Beach Hotel gets treated to beer buckets, Hazza’s bowl cut and a range of afternoon tunes.

After a week of waves, quokkas and behind the boat skurfing, Harry Bryant and the bands hit Cottesloe.

Finally, the first stop of Stab and Summer Bright’s Summer Sessions tour kicked off at the Ocean Beach Hotel – tinny launching distance from the sand. And oh boy does it feel good to be back on tour as another summer draws to a close.

As expected for a gig that costs you zero bones, the crowd packed in from all around town, as well as a number of backpackers from the hotel upstairs. It was pretty much one of those nostalgic summer house parties, minus all the sweat and morning after clean up of course.

But before it all kicked off you had to get past the big-boys on the door, we’re pretty sure one of them was a Steven Segal stunt double.

Getting things underway, local supports, Verge Collection – who also soundtracked Creed Mctaggart’s Summer Bay shralping in Real Axe – kicked off with a couple of homegrown earworms, including the Stab favourite, “Our Place’.

Following the local lads, the psychedelia tinged band, The Belligerents entered the stage led by their ever-eccentric frontman. The Belligerents bedazzled the ears and eyes off everyone their with a Led-Zep like jam to open their set, sprinkled with a touch of Garret-esque jiving.

This was all in the lead up to Alex Lahey rounding out the afternoon under the setting sun to a packed out venue. The earlier bands were mingling throughout and the crowd responded by shouting every lyric right back at Alex each and every song.

Along with a sunscreen and sunnies combo the punters filled buckets, then emptied them and banged their heads in the air at the cost of their spine all arvo long. At one point, the sonic aura was so powerful it healed the ailments of a young fan, completely eliminating their need for crutches. If you don’t believe us, just scroll through the gallery courtesy of Life Without Andy – who was there to capture the afternoon miracle.

There’s no better way to wash away a week of chasing waves up and down the coast, even popping over to Rotto to grab a selfie with a couple of cheeky quokkas.

This morning we’re recuperating our whiplashed necks and giving our bodies a few hours rest, but will be back at it all again this afternoon from 3:30pm at Vic Park’s, Embargo Bar.

So if you’re around the area and missed out last night (or if you’re keen on a double-up), then you know where to be.
