This pro game is going to get serious as hell for South Africa’s Bez Gibbens, like, real fast. You never saw anybody in your life be covered in so many adjectives by so many other pros. Shoot the bull enough and you’ll hear Brendon described as South Africa’s Dane Reynolds or the new Jordy Smith or as some kind of amalgam of the two. It’s all a load of crap, naturally. But, we gotta say. The kid, well he ain’t a kid, he’s 23 or something, makes y’dizzy with his talent.
And the music that hits his ears? His Stab dozen? It’s a little old, a little blue, uplifted with disco and then driven along the highway of despair by seventies guitar slinger Rodriguez. “Cause the sweetest kiss I ever got is the one I’ve never tasted,” sings Rodriguez. As a young man swinging around the world with a surfboard on his back, y’got a lot of tasting to do, Mr Gibbens. Chase that kiss! – Derek Rielly
