Would You Get Whipped Into A Set At Nazaré For $1,000?
Nic Von Rupp and friends do it for fun.
Surf vlogs have inundated our content calendar for the better part of the past year.
With every launch, the question arises: have we finally reached a critical mass of workout routines and bullet coffee recipes? Then someone comes along and manages to prove us wrong.
One of Portugal’s finest sons, Nic Von Rupp, has made a name for himself charging his homeland’s largest teepees and doing shit like this on the Mavs left. Combine a few loose screws with a free-flowing supply of Monster energy, and you get a man that has no restraint when it comes to putting himself under, over, or deep inside the ledge.
Nic’s new vlog, titled “The Life of Nic Von Froth” kicks off with a behind-the-scenes view of the inaugural 2019 Nazare Tow Challenge. Nic and his Italian tow partner Francisco Porcella are as hungry as they are prepared, fueling and re-fueling the skis, locking in their flotation, and cycling through sled variants by weight, ensuring all controllable factors of safety/success.
Even with a full team and years of experience behind them, it’s clear that no amount of preparation can usurp the inherent danger of Nazaré.
Experienced hell-man Alex Botelho nearly lost his life during the event, with everyone holding their breath in what Nic described as “the heaviest moment of my life”.
Thankfully Alex is on the road to a full recovery due to the life-saving efforts of the event’s medical staff, and while the WSL has taken strides to protect the safety of its BWWT surfers, Porcella says, “There needs to be a back-up for every ski out there, just watching.”
