Who Let These Guys Into Mexico?
Crano, Griffin, Nat, and Dunphy sneak across the border!
Mexico is outrageously en vogue right now.
With the US east and west coasts relatively lake-like for the past two months*, surfers from both sides have been convening south of the border in one of few countries that is taking American tourists right now.
Viva la Mexico!
On one of the biggest souths of the season, the rat-pack crew of Kolohe Andino, Ian Crane, Griffin Colapinto, Nat Young, and Michael Dunphy made their way down to Salina Cruz
“Kolohe and his dad Dino put the trip together,” says Crane, who compiled the video for his new brand, Beach Head. “The impetus behind it was to get out of town and score some waves with friends. Usually without COVID Kolohe and Griffin would be at a CT event while Nat, Dunphy, and I would be at a QS event on the other side of the world. Being able to all be available to target a swell and go on a surf trip together was an awesome change of pace, even tho we all would prefer things to be back on a normal schedule its pretty special to get to do a trip like this that never would have happened if it weren’t for the current situation.
“Unfortunately, Kolohe got hurt about 30 minutes into the first session of the trip and had to fly home with Dino the next morning. It totally flattened the vibe of everyone when it happened, we were all so bummed he got hurt and that they had to miss the trip they set up.”
We asked Crane who was the best surfer of the trip, in his opinion.
“The trip’s standout surfer to me was Griffin, he’s just really frickin good. The clips of him in this video aren’t even his best clips, he wanted to save all his A clips for a new project he has been working on. But I was the most stoked on the way Nat was surfing out there backhand, he goes so fast in and out of belting the lip it’s crazy.”
And finally, what’s his best tip for backside tuberiding?
“My single best tip for backside tube riding is to mimic Luke “The Dude” Lopez’s pig dog style!“

*ironically, the US “south coast”—Aka Gulf of Mexico—are currently getting pelted by consecutive tropical storms
