A little while back we posted the trailer for Riley Blakeway’s latest short, Thom: A Portrait of Modern Youth. Now, we have the full-length. Riley was so turned on by a documentary of a four-year-old kid being raised in the hippie district of Haight-Ashbury (“I smoke grass,” says the kid. “If you have some grass, I’ll show you!”) that he used its form to create his own film about Sunshine-Coaster Thom Pringle, 20 years old and, in one sense, a professional surfer. Professional in the sense that magazines and filmers like to use his image, but not so professional because he works on building sites to keep his dream alive. The 12-minute digi-short’s a departure from Riley’s usual tone, but well worth the watch.
The film premiered in Byron Bay on friday night, hosted by Thrills and accompanied by a photo exhibition by Proxy Noise, aka Dion Agius and Warren Smith. Below are a coupla happy snaps from the evening. For more photos, skip over to LifeWithoutAndy.
