This Is What Nazare’s “Biggest Swell Ever” Actually Looked Like

Europe has been putting smiles on a lot of people’s faces this past week. A few frowns, as well, for all those caught inside. A moment of silence for all the soggy sinuses in the Old World. 

Last week, the North Atlantic churned up a swell that has NVR utilizing four exclamation points in his YT title(!!!!). No word on what the increased enthusiasm will do for his algorithms but it was clearly warranted. Since Nazare came under focus of the big wave scene, no one has seen a swell this big with winds this good. Even Garret McNamara, who is well known for being one of the first international stars onto the spot, is calling this the biggest ever. 

The crowd on the cliff reflected the historic nature of the swell with hundreds of people swarming the cliff to get a look. Sensational viewing indeed, straight down to the failed crossover between NVR and Sergio Cosme at 3:50. With waves like this, it would be easy to imagine some form of carnage, but fortunately everyone made it in safely on a day that is likely to notch a few World Records in the coming months.
