Steph Gilmore Does The Impossible, Makes Crowded Malibu Look Like A Good Idea
A grandiose performance atop a lively yellow fish.
Malibu in the summertime can be a tanned or sometimes gloomy version of hell.
Parking is a nightmare, and the traffic only gets worse when you enter the water. Wavestorms, paddleboards, aircraft carriers, and various other massive floating weapons are a guarantee.
It’s easy to let frustration get to you and spend your hour-long “escape” mumbling profanities. Or you can be Steph Gilmore.
Steph doesn’t seem to mind any of the unmentionables above. She makes her way through the mess with smiles, high lines, and drawn-out carves, floating like a hummingbird, and stinging like a bee on the rare occasion.
Our friends at Full Moon Surf Club kept the frame a little tight here. Typically, the digital beheading of the subject in a surf edit would register as an issue, but in this case, it works perfectly. The way Steph maneuvers a board should be regarded as an esoteric form of art, and we thoroughly enjoyed the close-up.
