But if we had to choose one thing, it’d be this: despite his supernatural surfing ability and wealth, John seems like such an ordinary guy. Like he’s genuinely relatable to the rest of us, in contrast to Slater and Gabby, who live in a different realm of ego and fame. 

With John, it feels like he could blend into a supermarket, Best Buy, or Allman Brothers revival show quite easily without risking detection. There’s no air of pretension to him, nor a need for the spotlight. He’s just a regular fella who enjoys gardening, sailing, and beekeeping, and who also happens to be one of the world’s most gifted athletes.
