Something Slow And Moody From An Adored Surfing Lensman
Filmer can’t help it, they love the slow-mo!
Buying a RED camera is a mountainous investment.
Whether new or used, one can expect to pay upwards of four racks for surfing’s ultimate film toy, which is probably why video guys love to flaunt its eight-hundred-million-frames-per-second slow-mo capabilities.
Because otherwise what was even the point of spending all that cash? It’d be like buying a Maserati to have it sit in your garage. A purchase of that magnitude requires appreciation from others, which is why most “film reels” can feel rather (and at times, excruciatingly) slow for the viewer.
But we owe it to those people who spend their lives capturing surf, like the venerable Pat Stacy above, to watch these turtle-paced clips. Because without them we’d have nothing to watch at all.
And that would be very much worse than slow-mo.
