Imagine how difficult it must be for Jordy Smith, a world surfing talent, to know just how good the waves are in his home country of South Africa as he twiddles his oversized thumbs in San Clemente, USA. 

The yearly competition at Jeffrey’s Bay is Jordy’s saving grace, as he spends the week(s) leading up to the event scoring waves across the vast nation, which includes coasts facing two separate oceans. 

But more than anything in the world, even more than scoring great waves on a regular basis, Jordy Smith wants a World Title. So for reasons of global transportation, access to high-level training facilities, and proximity to his sponsors, Jordy resides Southern California, where the swells are typically marginal, rather than his wave-rich home of South Africa. 

This is a tough price to pay but one that would make a potential victory – probably not this year, but maybe next – that much sweeter.
