Mason Ho’s Surfboard Couldn’t Legally Ride a Rollercoaster, But It Surfs DOH Backdoor Pretty Darn Well
Little rail, lot of wave.
The North Shore is an uncensored breeding ground for surfboards of all shapes and sizes…
We would know, as we highlighted a variety of fiberglass friends in the Butter Knives segment of our twice-weekly news show, The Pick-Up.
With such a high volume of boards on-island and so many qualified surfers, unless a board is winning contests or slaying dragons, it’s hard for any single design to get such prolonged fanfare as Mason Ho’s mini 4’9 Rad Ripper.
Likening the board to ‘mini Oreos or mini Ressees’, we can’t argue with Mase’s evidence for less sometimes being more. The board is extra beefy in the rails but still boasts an impressively low volume, especially for the type of surfing Mase is doing on it (stuffing Backdoor bombs, whipping blow tail reverses, etc.).
In fact, despite not being able to forcefully lay a rail, is it possible Mase is getting even more torque out of his turns on this subdued version of Mayhem’s retro 80’s outline? Possibly, which begs the question: had Mase brought this to his pool party with fellow sub 5 foot board smith Blair Conklin, who woulda won the heat?
