Kerrzy Does Nazaré
“That place is mesmerizing and scary and everything in one,” says Josh Kerr. “It’ll humble you real quick, and I’m not that interested in surfing it much bigger than I did, if I’m honest.”
Josh Kerr might have captured our progressive hearts as a young airshow champion. Continued to court us over a decade-long competitive career. But he’s always moonlighted as one of the most brazen, head-down-and-go big wave guys operating, fitting in strike missions to, say, Mavs, just as comfortably as most tour vets slip in 18-holes during the down days.
Last year, after getting ousted from Peniche, Kerzzy made himself scarce, blasted north for a chance at a few bombs at Nazaré. Unarmed and without a proper suit of armor, Kerrzy borrowed a weapon and a fairly useless “inflation” vest, and gave it a go.
“It felt like it was 20-foot plus, but it was probably only 15-plus,” Kerrzy says. “But it was definitely humbling experience, that place is mesmerizing and scary and everything in one. It’ll humble you real quick, and I’m not that interested in surfing it much bigger than I did, if I’m honest.”
