Kei Kobayashi Is A “Wind-Up Toy”
Turn the key and watch him flick!
All I can think about when I see Kei Kobayashi is his dad, Masaki, with long sun bleached Asian strings hanging over the neck of his orange or white paneled O’Neill wetsuit, pushing Kei into waves at Lowers. Kei was the size of my thigh, and he’d pump viciously down a two-foot face and kick air reverse after air reverse.
We used to call him “the wind-up toy”. It was like he had a key on his back that if you twisted it counterclockwise for four rotations, he would find a ramp and make a high pitched samurai noise.
10 years later, this is the result.
It will be interesting to see if Kei, with his diminutive size but evident passion to succeed, has what it takes to cut it on the QS this year. We wish him the best of luck.
