Watch: The Very Best Of Young Gun, Kehu Butler

A two minute handshake with the pride of New Zealand.

Surfing will progress, it’s inevitable. Fast forward twenty years, or even ten, pro surfing will be unrecognisable. Majority of the top 34 will have slipped into the shade (excluding Kelly perhaps), their fire smothered by the vibrant groms and rookies of today. The webcast will feature a fresh set of faces. A bright new cast of stars to dazzle, entertain and create their own forms of controversy. Just who’ll be calling out the “tennis tour”, swearing at judges or stomping the first double twist in a jersey is yet to be seen, though together with Quiksilver, we’ve been working to find out. Welcome back to Young Guns, you’ve tuned in just in time for the main event.

Before the final eight go toe to toe for the title, we thought you’d like to get to know them a little better. So, here’s a punchy reel and a string of questions to break the ice.

First up we have Kiwi Kehu Butler, short for Te Kehukehu Mokoia Ngawhika Patara Butler. He’s the pride of New Zealand, sports a red coloured bull on his craft and an aggressive approach to meeting with a cascading wall. He boasts one of the more worldy edits, featuring shoots at Cloudbreak, La Graviere in France, Raglan and Matakana Island at home in NZ, The Gold Coast and Hawaii. The Raglan session went down as his favourite with “four feet, clean, rippable lefts with only three people out and perfect glass.”

Last place you surfed? Newport 56th street, super fun waves

Last move you pulled? A carve.

Last claim you pulled? No-claim claim against my good friend Rio Waida in our little freesurf practice heats.

Last song you listened to? ‘Shadow Of The Day’ by Linkin Park.

Last film you watched? ‘Hunt For The Wilder People’, one of my favourites made from one of my favourite producer/actors Taika Waititi.

Last book you read? Benji Marshall’s bio book, absolutely loved it!

Last google search? 123movies

Last person you stalked on instagram? CY McLeod tattoos, if you’re looking for some Maori traditional ink done look him up

Last person you pranked? Probably my mate James. I pulled off his towel while he was getting changed #straightnaked

Last text message you sent? To the bro Kurt, saying, “Get out of the toilet, I need a shit!”

Last meal your parents cooked you? My parents cooked me a steak with salad.

Last surfer that got you pumped? Filipe Toledo at J-Bay going ham!

With the Indonesian final merely days away, keep it dialled for updates.
