Watch: Jordy Smith’s First Winter Home In 13 Years
Road trip through a South African dreamscape with Mikey Feb.
Jordy Smith has been doing this a long, long time.
It’s strange, as one would think that when you become a perennial top-5 surfer, your life gets exponentially more exciting. While this is true in many ways, the monotony of the same stops, same regimen, and same end goal day in day out gets tiring. You may love chocolate cake, but what if someone asked you to eat it every day for the next 13 years?
Enter COVID-19. South Africa must’ve been listening in their middle school fire safety course, because they immediately stopped, dropped, and rolled straight into full on lockdown. For better of for worse, all surfing was shut down, that is until it wasn’t…
While life on tour normally brought Jordy around the world from March to Decemver, it had been 13 years since he spent a winter at home. Jordy made the most of it, greeting every session with optimism on his father’s SMTH Shapes.
As for Mikey, his surfing is looking downright zesty on his new Channel Island Twin Pin model. After drooling over it (and his surfing) for 10 days on our Stab High boat trip, we cannot wait to get our hands on one ourselves…
Click in above for 45 mins of truly captivating surf cinema. Highlights include Jordy’s triple barrel at 12:49 and the boys providing some fun to the local kids in a passing town. If you’re a young aspiring surfer it doesn’t get much better than that!
