Jordy Smith Has Been Terrorizing Hawaii On His Snub-Nosed Craft

The rest of the O’neill team does its best to keep up.

Ian Crane, Soli Bailey, Brett Barley, and the rest of the O’neill team are all objectively incredible surfers, but when pinned against the supreme dynamism of an on-fire Jordy Smith, they become baitfish to his sharkish skills.

Jordy recently bailed on Channel Islands to “play the field” of foam. Since then he’s tried Haydens, JSes, Gallaghers and more, with the idea that there’s not necessarily one best shaper for every wave in the world. Rather, Jordy has opted to try different brands at different breaks and see which one works best in each specific scenario.

Before the Founders’ Cup in Lemoore, Jordy tried a Slater Designs Cymatic straight from Surf Ranch’s board rack. As you’ll see in the video below, the fit wasn’t quite right, but there was potential.

Jordy opted not to ride that board in the event (where he led Team World to victory), but he clearly didn’t forget about that Slater Designs craft.

Fast forward seven months and Jordy’s in Hawaii, staying at the O’neill house and getting in some training reps for a start at Sunset and Pipe. During a few of the smaller days, Jordy pulled out the Cymatic and decided to test it over Oahu’s shallow reefs. The result, as you’ll see in the video above, is devastating for the wave and enthralling for the viewer.

Have you ever seen the big man demonstrate such power and control?
