Italo Ferreira Unleashes The Supersoaker Into Jeffreys Horizon
With Chopes on our mind, let’s revisit Italo’s highlight reel from ZAF’s ruler-straight point.
Backhand surfing at J-Bay turned a corner in July.
The tour’s premiere point break has long favored regular footers, who if 20-plus years of dominance told us anything, it’s they had an advantage.
The world’s best goofys have since figured out that instead of carving back to the pocket, they’re better off squaring up and stabbing their tails into Jeff’s lip like a stud in the lip of an angsty teenage girl.
In surfing today, if we’re talking backhanded progression, Italo Ferreira is the alpha. There’s an ambidextrous nature to Italo that has to be likened to his growing up in Baia Formosa, where he mastered his backhand on a punchy, 300 meter right-hander.
His backside roters have become world-renowned, but what really sets him apart is his ability to throw reo’s at sections most of the top 34 would straighten out on. Instead, Italo presses on his back foot and free falls into event wins (Bells, Keramas, 2nd at J-Bay).
We’re a little late to the party with posting this clip, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth a watch.
