Is A Back Knee On The Deck A Sign Of Surf Superiority?
Aesthetic evaluations inside.
It’s long been ingrained in our psyche that a dropped back knee is a sign of surfing superiority.
Parko has it, Andy had it, even the Anti-Sheep went through phases where his patella kissed the fiberglass. While the functionality of this technique remains largely contested, we can agree that most surfing “stylists” sport a collapsed hinge. And at the end of the day, most of us just wanna look good on a wave. Or at least not look bad.
By definition, Luke Gordon’s surfing does not look bad. It doesn’t look like Parko’s or Andy’s or Kelly’s, but the boy drops his knee quicker than a Mormon who wants his first root. Not bad in the tube, either.
