First On The List Of Places We Really Wish We’d Visited Before Covid Is…

Skeleton Bay, naturally.

Hope is a good thing.

Some would even say it’s a necessary thing in our current state, as a means of keeping the world in motion, even if that motion looks something like a baby moose on ketamine. But the reality is, we don’t know when things will get back to “normal”, if ever in our lifetime.

As surfers, we can live without the majority of life’s common luxuries—champagne, caviar, gatherings where shirts with sleeves are required, etc. (You can keep em, covid.) But the one lost indulgence that’s really gonna hurt us is cheap, uninhibited international travel.

Surfers spend their lives scouring magazines, websites, Instagram, and beyond for the world’s best waves, which we then catalog, research, and obsess over, only to get skunked on our annual two-week trip.

It doesn’t make any logical sense, but it’s the surfer’s way.

My white whale spot is Skeleton Bay. I’ve been watching the place for years, but for reasons x, y, and z, have never pulled the trigger when it was on.

“It’s so expensive,” I’d tell myself. “There’ll be another swell next year.”

If I knew then what I know now, I’d be $4,000 poorer but sleeping with the peace of mind that it’s forever checked off my list. Now I just have to pray that Africa re-opens before my first colonoscopy.
