Click or Miss: Want To Make A Good Surf Vlog?
Follow this blueprint on your path to increased digital engagement.
Nic Von Rupp has made 25 episodes of his Vlog ‘Life of The Von Froth’.
That’s a lot by some measures and a little by other. However, the undeniable truth is that Nic rarely puts out a dud. The reason being: 90% of his videos consist of world class waves.
Nic’s career as a free surfer enables him to chase swells while others are forced to go to places like, say, Newcastle. This freedom furthers Nic’s position as one of the surf world’s most entertaining vloggers, with his latest episode providing quite possibly the strongest argument for the above to date.
His capturing of the experience of surfing Cave—one of the most frightening waves in Europe—with a crew of locals is truly unique. While highly dangerous/entertaining, how many videos have you seen from the channel at a pumping wave?
Not everyone can be Nic, likely because not everyone is willing to take a beating, break a leash, and come in with such a calm demeanor [see:1:03]. If you want to make a good surf vlog (at least in our eyes), take a page out of Nic’s book and focus on making videos with the drawcard of world class waves. They’re a whole lot more palatable than “like and subscribe”.

We discussed the majority of why you should watch this above, but we didn’t get to NVR’s ridiculously ingenious wetsuit situation. With the majority of injuries at The Cave coming from hitting the less-than-hospitable reef, Nic decided to don not one, but two Hurley 4/3’s for added cushion in case things went south. Good thing he was towing. I don’t care if you look like Jose Canseco circa 2001, anyone’s arms after paddling in 8 mils of rubber would be #dead.

In Stab Squared presented by Oakley, we asked surfers how their quarantine was going and Kolohe Andino replied, “better than Leo’s.” With his hotel room situated directly facing a construction site, Leo found himself in something of a 4-star torture chamber. Incessant construction noise + no waves could make for a brutal two weeks, and while we’re sorry Leo had to endure such pain, we’re giving this a Click as we are thoroughly impressed by his making it through with such a jovial attitude—and equally impressed by his surfing on some fresh Sharp Eyes after 2 weeks off. Sheeeeesh!

“Behind the lines is back!” Call us conceited, but Red Bull Surfing’s productions do a phenomenal job of offering otherwise unseen insights into life on Tour, which has everything to do with their continually growing roster of highly competitive athletes. While his time in Portugal/Hawaii isn’t necessarily the best prep work for the current waves at Newcastle, Kanoa will surely be leaning on his winter sessions at Coxos come time for West Oz. If Kanoa’s vlog is F1 racing, Jacob Szekely’s latest video is your local Demolition Derby. Surfing’s closest thing to Jackass 2.0, Zeke’s crew linked up with one of Youtube’s biggest stars in Danny Duncan. Zeke spent the day showing Danny around San Diego, introducing him to one of his childhood heroes in Bam Margera and generally wreaking havoc in his neighborhood. In line with current C/M policy, we have to give this a miss due to the complete lack of surf clips. With that, if you are looking for something entirely out of the ordinary or are in need of a digital version of a caffeine IV, click above.

Griffin, Crosby, and Seth traveled together to catch the WSL’s charter flight to Australia. It was an interesting trip. Their poor car’s roof had to sustain the weight of a lot of fiberglass, and Crosby was forced to lay on the floor for the long-ish drive from SC to LA. Nevertheless, the boys and their boards made it through both the trip and the quarantine alive. The surfing section begins around the 13:00. It’s very good, most especially Griffin’s wave 16:19.

As a session Mikey C. described as “One of the Most Spectular Waveriding Displays We’ve Seen, Full Stop”, this is a no-brainer. Be sure to put down some tarp a la American Psycho before 5:17 as you don’t want to stain the carpet with chunks of fried mind.
