Do you really need a straw to connect your mouth to your drink. The answer is “no”.

“You can drink your juice without a straw. It’s pretty easy, you just gulp it down.” – Jordy Smith on his anti-straw stance.

Straws suck in more way than one. Yes, they might be good at providing a toothless entry into your funnel, but their environmental impact on both land and sea far outweighs one of life’s simple pleasures. And if you’re overtly concerned about your pegs, maybe you should give up the soft drinks or just purchase a couple packs of paper straws. It ain’t hard!

Straws aren’t easily recyclable and they take over 500 years to decompose. Many straws will end up in landfill, however those which don’t often end up on our beaches after making their way across numerous oceans. In the last 25 years alone over six million straws have been collected from our oceans and the amount of plastic straws produced and used daily in the USA are enough to circle our Earth two and a half times.

Our plastic pollution is rising and unfortunately so is our production levels of single use plastic products.

Jordy learnt the hard way in a Q&A about global straw production and, in turn, has pledged to ditch the cylinders in exchange for a good old fashion gulping.

Yes, we know Jordy Smith spends his years traversing the globe burning up jet fuel, churning through non-recyclable boards and hopping cars to and from each event; but guess what, that’s a tough one to change when you’re a professional surfer. In case you haven’t realised, travel and surfboards whilst a luxury for some are a prerequisite for the top.

There’s a tonne of wasteful habits each and every single one of us have, some of which are avoidable, others which aren’t. When it comes to environmentalism however, it isn’t an all or nothing approach, even the most minute reduction in personal waste is an improvement. In this case, Mr. Smith is reducing his overall impact by eliminating his use of the plastic straws.

So next time, before you instinctually plug your iced coffee, green blended juice or midnight cocktail with a couple of straws, reconsider your options and swap it out for paper or even better, nothing at all.

And if you’re going to ditch straws or any other single use plastics, you may as well make a plastic free pledge voicing the changes you’re going to make; you can do this by heading over to the Corona website or if you’re down at Bells you can make the pledge at their plastic pavilion at the contest.

You might just convince a couple of your friends to join the cause and, in the process, find yourself in the running to win a trip to the Corona Bali Pro at Keramas!
