Yet Another Surf Rack Goes Up In Flames In Waikiki
The third time in 20 months.
For the third time in the past two years, a fire has destroyed the surf racks in Waikiki.
You may recall the 500 boards which burned in February of 2020 at Kuhio Beach Surfboard Lockers in an arson incident.
Or more recently, on October 17, 2021 where 575 surfboards were torched in the racks next to the historic Moana Surfrider Hotel and Waikiki police substation on Kalakaua Avenue. The suspect from this incident is still in police custody and has his arraignment scheduled on Monday, Nov. 8.
On Thursday morning, the trilogy occurred. More surfboards burned to the crisp. Police suspect arson.
According to Khon 2 News:
The second fire identified was located at Nalu’s Storage, next to Cheesecake Factory and the Outrigger Hotel on Kalakaua Avenue.
HFD reported to Dukes Lane and extinguished the blaze by 4:15 a.m. A few surfboards were destroyed in the fire, but it is unknown how much damage was caused; the Honolulu Police Department (HPD) is investigating this case as first-degree arson.
There were no reported injuries and the investigation is still ongoing.
