And how about Julian Wilson, last year’s US Open of Surfing champ, heading very much in the right direction to repeat his gold? Today the 24-year-old lit up with a backside roter for a 9.83, and ended with a combo of 18.03. “That air felt good,” he said afterward. “It was one of the ones that you just go for and you don’t always have the highest percentage on, but I kinda surprised myself. I was in a position in the heat where I could go for it. It was good to land it and it gives me confidence.”

Michel Bourez was another man with continued dominance beneath the shadow of the pier today, taking down Miggie Pupo and eliminating HB guru Brett Simpson. And, he did it without dancing above the lip. “I’m not an air guy and I just stick to my plan,” said le Spartan. “I knew Miguel would go for big airs and you never know with Brett. I think he injured himself, but I hope he’s alright.”

Other wins in round two included Jadson Andre, Kolohe Andino, Bede Durbidge and the champ, Kelly Slater. And you better believe Kelly was the last surfer on the beach signing autographs, well after everyone but a few thrilled fans had packed up and bounced.
