Are World Tour judges setting their scale before the horn blows?

If you’re Ryan Callinan, you’re not willing to take that chance. For this week’s episode of The Drop, Danny Johnson called Ryan up to discuss his recent contender for edit of the year, which features 15 minutes of A+ footage from one of the best Australian seasons in recent memory. During this conversation, Ryan revealed to us that he doesn’t like dropping clips during the event out of fear people may place expectations on his surfing in particular wave types, only to have him then potentially fall short in a heat. While we understand Ryan’s thinking, we sincerely hope that judges are not influenced by their morning IG scrolls. Whatever the case may be, Ryan is a clear-cut favorite for the first CT at his hometown event. Maybe that’s why he decided to break his own rule…

Next up we talk to Wave Pool Mag’s Bryan Dickerson, who recently penned a piece for Stab Premium in which he discusses the cost and variance amongst the world’s preeminent wave pool technologies. As a man who’s covered the space both from the perspective of a surfer and a market watcher, the guy knows his stuff, even bringing a holistic point of view to the question: ‘What is the best wave pool technology?’ in a way only a surfer would.

Bryan Dickerson: 26:52
