With his departure from the World Tour after a decade-and-a-half driving the same high-performance steeds through heat after heat, it’s easy to understand why Mick Fanning would be eager to get his feet on some new and Other equipment.

And it looks like he’ll have the pick of the Awayco litter from now on, the 3x World Champ hopping on board the San Francisco start-up’s  roster of ambassadors—and, if rumors are true, as a fairly serious investor in the endeavor.

“We are so proud to announce that on August 23, 2018, 1:05pm PST, we welcomed Michael “Mick” Eugene Fanning to the Awayco Family,” the brand wrote today. “Weighing 75kg and 177cm long, with 10 fingers, 10 toes and 3 world titles, Mick is healthy and happy and currently traveling the world without surfboards. Awayco is resting comfortably at its headquarters in San Francisco. We didn’t know we could feel this much love.”

Mick had similarly glowing thoughts on the newly hatched relationship.

“There’s a few different ways I think Awayco can be used,” Mick tells Stab. “For the traveler that’s in and out of cities and doesn’t want to pay the extra fees on airplanes or deal with baggage. They can pack a wetsuit and pick up a board anywhere. I’ll use it in that realm a fair bit.

“But then there’s such a wide range of different boards you can go and experiment, find something that you may have never actually ridden, you can go and try that. It might just change your whole perception. You might think that the board you’ve been riding for the last 5 years is your ultimate board, but then you go and jump on something else and it might just open your world up to a whole new world of shapes. There’s so many different ways to use it. And who doesn’t like trying new boards?”
