John Florence just beat Jamie O’Brien in their second consecutive Volcom Pipeline Pro final together.
Last year, Jamie posted 15.34 in the final, which wasn’t enough to get past John’s 18.36. This year, Jamie stepped up his game and hammered a total of 19.40. But, John was too strong with a combined total of 19.93 points.
In the final, things might’ve been different for Nate Yeomans if he’d gotten in front of the burner on his Pipe set. Kai Barger’s total, 18.20, would’ve won him most heats at Pipe, but when you’re dancing with Jamie and John, it’s a different song. Jamie opened hard with a 9, an 8.33, then a 9.47. After breaking through the glass door of a Pipe bomb, John was gifted a perfect 10. Jamie then scooped a 9.93 and was still in front, so John gave him a congratulatory hug. But, with 30 seconds remaining, a set jacked and John paddled, flirted with going left, then opted for the right. A 9.93. Jamie then said that the hug actually belonged to John. Both of their last waves were 9.93’s, but John had more in the vault prior to his.
How’s this kid gonna do on tour? With a swagger of strong performances through the Hawaiian season (winner of the Vans Triple Crown, winner of Volcom Pipe Pro) under his belt, it could be a very confident Mr Florence that rolls up to Snapper Rocks in 23 days’ time. And, confidence means danger.
