Here’s What Your Favorite (QS) Surfers Need To Qualify For The Tour Tomorrow

‘Twas a wild day of competitive surfing, from the Caroline conspiracy at Honolua Bay to Slater’s domination at Sunset. 

Tomorrow, both the female World Champ and the men’s QS qualifiers will be decided. 

Without too much yammering, I’d like to share some rough arithmetic about what each QS surfer needs to qualify at Sunset tomorrow. 

Some preliminary info:

• There are three surfers still in the event who are basically guaranteed to qualify (Jadson Andre, Matthew McGillivray, and Connor O’Leary). 
• There are 13 surfers still in the event who, with a certain level of progression, have a chance at qualification (listed below).
• All of the numbers below portray the minimum progression requirement for each surfer, meaning it will get them past the current cut-off of 17,310 points. Due to the nature of how many surfers are in a potential qualification position, it’s likely that the minimum progression requirement will not be enough for any of these surfers to actually qualify. Unfortunately, there’s no better way to portray their positions, as it’s impossible to know where the official cut line will land. But, looking at the list, it’s likely that surfers 8-11 will get bumped from the current qualification roster.

Without further disclaimers, here’s the list:

Morgan Cibilic (AUS): 13th. Morgan is in the best position of all the potential qualifiers. He needs to make just one more heat to achieve the minimum requirement. 

Ethan Ewing (AUS) and Carlos Muñoz (CRI): 9th. Ethan and Carlos need to make just one more heat then place third in the quarters to achieve the minimum requirement.

Stuart Kennedy (AUS) and Nat Young (USA): 7th. Stuey and Nat need to make the semifinals to achieve the minimum requirement.

Jack Robinson and Jacob Willcox (AUS): 4th: Jack and Jacob must make the final to achieve the minimum requirement.

Jesse Mendes (BRA), Joan Duru (FRA), Gatien Delhaye (FRA) and Beyrick De Vries (ZAF): 2nd. Jesse, Joan, Gatien, and Beyrick must place second in the final to achieve the minimum requirement.

Zeke Lau (HAW) and Alonso Correa (PER): 1st. Zeke Lau and Alonso Correa must win the Vans World Cup to achieve the minimum requirement. Interestingly, Zeke won this event last year, making his requirement well within reason. 

Again, most of these requirements will increase throughout finals day, but hopefully this provides some clarity.
