Joel Parkinson was knocked out of the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro in round one. Can you believe it? After winning Surfest and placing second at the Quiksilver Pro, Gold Coast, the current world champ only put together an 8.86 combined total in a very uncharacteristic stumble.

Dusty Payne, howevs, scooped the day’s highest heat total with some excellent pocket work, clocking 18.60 outta 20. “I got really lucky and I was in a good rhythm out there,” said Dusty. “I don’t think I’ve ever had a good left out there, so I’m stoked I got a good one in a heat. I love West Oz – I’ve done a bunch of trips over here and it’s one of my favourite places to come to.”

Billy Stairmand had the second-highest heat total of the day, posting a combined total of 18.23. “I really like this event,” said Billy. “There’s really big left-handers and I love lefts because I’m from Raglan. It’s fun to come over here and enjoy this coastline. The Oakley crew are all staying together, surfing and enjoying WA, it’s great.”

If Margies is the kinda wave you dig, then watch it when it goes live again, over here.
