Gossip Girl: Is That RIP CURL John John’s Wearing?

Since news of his departure from Hurley, there has been wild speculation as to where, exactly, the World’s (Current) Most Marketable Surfer Might land. 

At various times, our most trusted moles, separately and independently, have reported, on “good information” that Double John was in negotiations with Patagonia, Rip Curl, Lululemon, etc. 

One rumour that has left staffer’s imaginations reeling has been that Rip Curl, after being acquired by the very on-John-John-brand Katmandu, was moving around marketing dollars (read: renegotiating surfer’s contracts for less than their sticker price), and even going so far as cutting marquee athletes entirely, to make room for the eldest Florence Brother. 

Today, John’s fiancee*, Lauren Cribb, posted an Insta story from their home on the North Shore, showing John bravely rocking perhaps the second most difficult wetsuit style to make look cool: the long-sleeve springsuit. 

And what iconic circle logo was emblazoned on John’s increasingly formidable pectoral? 

Rip Curl. 

Now, there’s been no confirmation from either party as to what, exactly, the working relationship is, so this is all speculation. But let the idea ruminate a moment. John John on Rip Curl. John John on The Search—nay, John John, Mick, Mason, and Curren on The Search. 

Go further, and you suddenly find yourself conceiving of a View From A Blue Moon-level production, filmed over the next year sailing John’s beloved Falcor to far-flung lineups…

My gawwwddd, tell us it’s true. 

And lest we forget that John on RC would mean that the world’s two best competitive surfers would be flying under the same banner. Imagine the drama!
