By Chopes standard, yesterday was more of a play day. With the swell peaking overnight and quickly deteriorating throughout the day, the packed lineup was left to make-do with the playful 4-6 foot conditions. Amongst those enjoying the purity of the Tahitian peel were John John Florence, Michel Bourez, Frankie Harrer, Koa Smith as well as locals Mateia Hiquily and Tikanui Smith. But according to our lensman Henrique Pinguim, it was the Japanese contingent of Keito Matsuoka and Tatsuya Fukagawa who were making best use of the lackluster swell.
“There was great expectation for this swell and I think everyone was waiting for perfect conditions,” says Henrique. “The lineup was made up of Tahitians, Hawaiians, Brazilians and Japanese. But in my opinion it was the Japanese who gave the most convincing performance.”
