CJ and Damien Have Unfinished Business That Should Be Settled At Chopes
Brother vs. Brother In Tahiti? Yes, please.
It’s been a few years now, but there was a while during the 2000s that absolutely nobody wanted to draw a Hobgood in a heat at Teahupoo.
Ceej and Damo charged the place with the kind of reckless, redneck abandon that literally freaked fellow competitors out.
During the contests, the boys would rock out to the lineup in this tiny little tinnie not much bigger than a Hinano can, and like a lot of surfers from Florida, had a little extra salsa on the chip on their shoulder when it came to proving themselves in left-hand ledges.
CJ won the contest in 2004. Damo was on his way to winning it in 2005 before he dislocated his shoulder in the final—and fellow Florida cat Kelly Slater scored two perfect 10s.
But after all their time on tour, the twins never actually surfed a heat against one another. Not once. Somehow there was never a brother versus brother affair.
But what if there was? Who would have taken it?
It’s always been a dream of theirs and is one of the storylines of their new documentary “And Two If By Sea.”
They’ve just launched a social media campaign to try and make it happen at the upcoming comp at the End of the Road. Join the conversation on Insta by using the hashtags #HobgoodVSHobgood and #Tahiti.
What do think, one more heat for all the marbles, or, considering its Chopes we’re talking about, dare we say, Family Jewels?
