A Good Year – Part one

This is the first instalment of a series we’ll be running over the next 10 days or so. With the countdown to ’11 close at hand, we thought it’d be interesting to compare a few different surfers’ experiences in the ’10. This, the first segment, asks what the best session that each surfer had all year was. You’ll notice all these guys are free surfers and not on the dream tour. There’s a reason for that. We gots a coupla a WT guy’s recollections on the way, so sit tight. Also dear readers, we’d love to know what the best session you saw or heard about all year was. What was the best session you had in 2010? Dion Agius: A day we had filming for (new Globe film) 0000 in France this year. It was a secret beachbreak that was like Kirra. It was fucked-up. Taj (Burrow) and Yades (Nichol) looked like they were out at Rabbit Hill (in Western Australia where they’re from), getting three barrels on a wave. It was crazy. The most memorable for sure. Craig Anderson: I’d say Desert Point, in Lombok. I don’t exactly know the date. It was with some of the guys I grew up with in South Africa. They all came over to Bali for a trip. We hired a car and drove over there for a swell. It was just super fun waves with all my good friends. I got a couple of good clips, too. It was all time. There were tons of other guys out but I got a couple of really fun waves. Wade Goodall: I went to Desert Point with Billabong – Andy (Irons), Joel (Parko), Tiago (Pires), Granger (Larson)… it was just mental. It was pumping and the shit Andy and Joel were doing out there that day, that was the most fucked-up shit I’ve ever seen. We got the boat over there in the morning, surfed all day, got the boat back, went straight to the airport and flew home. It was just brutal. It was a nuts session. And that was the last time I got to surf with Andy. Jay Davies: I went to Indo with the Electric crew. They took us up there for an annual trip, all the team riders and most the guys that work with them. It was in October, I think. We got Greenbush just… firing. That was the best waves I got all year, for sure. It’s just mad. It was really good tide in the morning and just so perfect. No one else around. There was only one other boat but they were cool, they were Aussies that I actually knew from West Aus. We had such a sick sesh. Ozzie Wright: Desert Point would have to be the best waves I got all year. I think it was around August. There were a few days that weren’t too crowded. (Josh) Kerzy was out there one of the days, and Asher Pacey. (Craig) Ando was out there one day, too. Just such good waves.

Also dear readers, we’d love to know what the best session you saw or heard about all year was.

What was the best session you had in 2010?

Dion Agius:

A day we had filming for (new Globe film) 0000 in France this year. It was a secret beachbreak that was like Kirra. It was fucked-up. Taj (Burrow) and Yades (Nichol) looked like they were out at Rabbit Hill (in Western Australia where they’re from), getting three barrels on a wave. It was crazy. The most memorable for sure.
